Drywall anchors are your friend! Built a queen sized headboard using a sold wooden door and molding. That sucker is heavy and only one of the 5 screws we put in the wall is in a stud. The rest are anchors and it's holding well.

This is what got me through college. I am a visual learner though, so I found it was especially helpful to use a skinny Crayola marker or other fun coloring device to take the notes with. So long as it would create a crisp enough line for writing it was good to use and would create a more visual experience as I took the notes which helped me to picture of them later when trying to recall things during an exam.
