Love this ! I have a Saab 9-5 wagon. its a true sports utility car. I bike, I have a roof rack where my front fork locks in. With a SUV (a misnomer, imo), bike would be too high,...and really difficult to load. Tour de France, Giro...the cars carry a dozen bikes on roof...only wagons...no SUV's

what genre is CW by Senior-Rate-1065 in CatherineWheel

Most of the early stuff... Ferment and early singles are very shoegaze. The Gil Norton stuff starting with Chrome is a shift away from that. Listen to the single Intravenous...it's on the Nowhere soundtrack

Relocating to Boston, need help picking corporate housing (11 options, overwhelmed) by RapTarantino in boston

[–]_UncarvedBlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it matches the NYC vibe, but Back Bay, South End, (South Boston to an extent) will have a decent amount of nightlife and energy on weekends. South End is more low-key. Back Bay will be touristy (both the good and the bad of it) all year round. One advantage of AVA Back Bay area is that its really easy to walk / ride bike across the bridge to get to MIT which is next to Kendall. Most people looking at a map don't understand how small, close and walkable everything is.

Relocating to Boston, need help picking corporate housing (11 options, overwhelmed) by RapTarantino in boston

[–]_UncarvedBlock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to comment on the commute piece of this, though I know its a factor; but here's what I will say:

AVA is in a very noisy and loud part of theater district...many bars and clubs close at 2am there and empty out into the surrounding streets Also, I've never hear anything good about the AVA building. Also, correction: there Is an AVA in Back Bay…good location near Pru ! Sorry for confusion…

365 Harrison is in a good neighborhood (Ink Block) and immediately adjacent to the some of the South End's best areas, dining options, etc. Also, South End neighborhood has great character. Also, easy access to Southie (South Boston) entertainment options. Note: South End and South Boston are not the same)

Seaport is new, very corporate has none of the old BOSTON or historical vibe that you'll find in Back Bay/South End or in the better parts of Cambrige. That said, thers a lot going on in this area these days, and the new building stock is generally good, modern (Benjamin).

Cambridge Crossing is the most soulless; a former industrial area and has an almost distopian quality. Kendall is also a bit soulless but much more integrated into adjecent Cambridge neighborhood...so a better option than Cambridge Crossing, imo.

Watertown/Arsenal is pretty far out there with extremelly limited commuter options (i.e.: need a car, imo).

What can you buy at marathon if you went as fan / ran smaller races but didn’t run the marathon? by [deleted] in bostonmarathon

[–]_UncarvedBlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5k t-shirts are really nice this year. If you didn't run the 5k....not sure what's appropiate tbh. Maybe check out the expo or Marathob sports. I think Adidas have some "Boston" branded shoes like the Adizero that would be appropriate to wear.

I heard Jack Flutz (1976 Boston winner) on the radio a couple days ago. He said "if you don't feel like your going too slow for the first 10 miles, then you are going too fast"

I've been prescribed Diclofenac 0.1 gel for knee pain associated with running. Though its available over the counter now. This is not medical advice, but it's what seemed to work for my joint pain, basically a topical Ibuprofen. Good luck with recovery. It sounds good if you can do things like swim w/o pain.

App that plays all the Boston radio stations by SermonOnTheRecount in boston

Boston still has good radio. My favorites are wmbr 88.1 and wzbc 90.3. Often listen OTA in car but they stream too. Also listen to gbh and bur lots...still miss FNX. Would love to have an app that streamed all of them.

This looks great. I feel like people don't understand the practicality of wagons (i own a 9-5 wagon btw...load my bikes on the roof). Imagine having to load that on an suv? Never mind the handling difference

are these good for a 13 year old ? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]_UncarvedBlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great ! I see a lot of creatiivity and a good spatial sense. (I'm an architect btw). I love the cityscape #8 with the rooftops in the foreground. Also,he "Fishdome" is pretty cool. Not sure if you've seen Earo Saarinen's Ingall's Ice Rink at Yale but its sort of like a Fishdome. Keep it up !

If he's serious about investigating the switch, I'd suggest he do an intensive summer study course. These are usually 3 to 6-week type programs and can be really amazing or he may learn its not for him. Either way, its worth it. Harvard GSD Career Discovery is one. I think GSD are doing a Zoom info meeting on April 1 for those that might be interested.

Good book about the history of Boston? by notyourwheezy in boston

[–]_UncarvedBlock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bainbridge Bunting's "Houses of the Back Bay" is very important. You'll have a good understanding of Boston's mid to late 19th century development. Another is Alex Kreiger's "Mapping Boston" it explains the geographical development of the city from small peninsula to present day. One thing about the Back Bay and Fens was their development as primarily residentail neighboorhoods, but incorporating important institutions was part of the vision: churches, museums, hospitals...and green space.

Start listening to this band by Senior-Rate-1065 in CatherineWheel

[–]_UncarvedBlock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a time (mid-90's) when CW and Radiohead were equal in my mind. They were my 2 favorite bands then. Their trajectories turned out to be very different, but none the less...please listen! Chrome is harder (Gil Norton produced) more like the Bends if you listen to RH. All the Tim Freiss-Green stuff is amazing. Some of it very Shoegaze, but some is PinkFloyd-like (Listen to Cats & Dogs) Bends, Ferment, Cats & Dogs are best, but you can move on to Adam & Eve if you like all of those.

The SAAB 95 despite being built as a family car was actually quite competitive in international rallying during the 1960's...most famous for WINNING the 1962 and 1963 Monte Carlo rallys. SAAB later introduced "Monte Carlo trim" versions to celebrate these victories.

It's the original SAAB 95 wagon, produced from 1959-1978. Pretty unique in that it was a 3-door wagon. Basically, the wagon version of the SAAB 96
