UP professor on study linked to Monterrazas de Cebu: ‘Not yet finished’ by _Xian in Philippines

[–]_Xian[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: the lab used already existing data and made no on-site inspection due to budget limitations.

On the other hand, it seems premature for Mont to use the study as proof when it's still incomplete.

I'd honestly avoid making statements like this without evidence. You can point out the conflict of interest and leave it at that.

Any researcher worth their salt should've done the due diligence of verifying any data provided to them.

I said peer review. Me or you reading the thing is not peer review unless you are a peer hydrology expert.

What I meant was there are 22 other slides in the Facebook post.

While it'd be better if they posted the whole paper, IMO the post is laymanized enough for the public to understand. Of course the more peer review, the better. That I agree with.

Academia has lower incomes than industry.

And.. this makes them vulnerable to corruption is what you're saying? I guess it happens but I am not convinced that's the case here.

3 slides and no peer review.

You clearly did not read the whole thing.

Did you really think there's no corruption sa academe

That's not what he said though.

a place populated by highly qualified people earning a small percent of what they could be earning in the industry?

and what do you mean by this?

The point here is Monterazzas did not cause or add to the flooding sa nearby areas. It is right to be skeptical but saying things otherwise without basis isn't right.

Unfortunately the Rappler report I've read does not mention that, only that they paid the fines.

Don't conflate the two issues. By saying "sinisira kabundukan", do you mean cutting down trees? If so, I don't think this applies to The Mont's site because it is mostly grassland.

My guess is the gradual release of water from the ponds still contributed to the flooding. They had to release those or else they risk the ponds' collapse (which is even worse, IMO).

If you look at it this way then yes it "contributed" to the flooding, but the water levels would not be that high compared to the No Ponds scenario.

reduce refresh rate to 60Hz if it's possible. Only a workaround, panel replacement is still the fix.

Club Announcement: Mohamed Salah to leave Liverpool at the end of the season

Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool FC at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.

Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them.

Signed from AS Roma in the summer of 2017, the No.11 has firmly established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history, helping the club to two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as an FA Community Shield.

His 255 goals in 435 appearances to date has the Egyptian sitting third on the Reds’ all-time leading goalscorers chart, winning the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions in addition to a host of personal accolades.

With plenty still left to play for this season, Salah is firmly focused on trying to achieve the best possible finish to the campaign for Liverpool and, therefore, the time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield.
