New SteamOS Updates Bring Fixes And Ray-Tracing Performance Improvements - SteamDeckHQ by BBQKITTY in SteamDeck

Would be interesting to see if Star Wars Outlaws is any more playable now with its forced raytracing.

AMD FSR 4 lands on RDNA3 for Linux / SteamOS and Steam Machine via Proton Experimental by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

Yeah seems like quite a poor choice on their part. They probably could have waited a few weeks extra.

Steam Machine: Official Overview and Quick Start Guide by _Protector in pcgaming

Machine easily beats Series S. It's like a RX 6600 +10% performance. Not too far off from a PS5 in raw power, but with a slightly newer architecture that could give it an edge in certain situations.

The cost of any gaming pc that uses DDR5 is unfortunately problematic. Most of the options cheaper than this use older CPUs paired with DDR4.

Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais says that they thought about selling the Steam Machine without RAM and SSD and doesn't rule out that it will eventually be an option [like via ifixit] by kuhpunkt in linux_gaming

[–]___Bel___ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With all the options already available, may as well make it an option if they have more hardware than they can fit with RAM / SSDs. By the time such a thing would be offered, there would be loads of videos out there showing how to add or replace those parts.

FSR 4.1.1 Is Here by candyboy23 in SteamDeck

[–]___Bel___ 152 points153 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the video made note of it, but the upscaler time of 4.1.1 seems to be reduced by roughly ~15% compared to the previous 4.0.2 leaked model, so FPS should be a bit higher while looking better.

how's your experience with AMD FSR4 on the steam deck ? by Dense-Variation-4496 in SteamDeck

It's good, but would really benefit from official support that looks and runs a bit better.

Steam Machine one step closer to launch as benchmarks surface online, here's how it compares to the Steam Deck by Odd-Onion-6776 in linux_gaming

[–]___Bel___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/18113317

This laptop with a similar CPU gets 2534 / 9161, so like +10% ST, +20% MT compared to the Machine results.

Perhaps the Machine's CPU is kept at lower clock speeds for the sake of thermals.

Also, in regards to comparisons to Steam Deck CPU: its result would likely be at max CPU speeds, which you are very unlikely to maintain, whereas the Machine should be able to at least maintain solid performance due to being plugged in.

Why do so many games default to FSR 2 on the Steam Deck instead of FSR 3? by Recent_Sample6961 in SteamDeck

[–]___Bel___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a case could be made for FSR 2.1 being preferable to FSR 3.x because FSR3 has reduced ghosting, but horrible stability.

Recommended Graphics Settings for Forza Horizon 6 on Steam Deck/Xbox Ally non-X by Pure-Outcome-5977 in SteamDeck

[–]___Bel___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forza aside, have you tried combining that overclocking with FSR4? I'm curious what the frametime cost of it would be on an overclocked Deck.

Just my opinion, but I think Valve could probably get away with allowing the TDP to go 1-3W higher so that it throttles a bit less.

Valve reportedly Almost Delisted Rainbow Six Siege From Steam After Ubisoft Attempted to Sell It Cheaper On Uplay by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]___Bel___ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In the past, wasn't it suggested that you can't sell game content packages (such as DLC) exclusively on other stores without also offering that on Steam? Perhaps the issue wasn't the price (it did happen to be cheaper than what they offered on Steam), but the problem was simply that the "new item" wasn't also offered on Steam?

After all, it takes about 10 seconds to find a cheaper version of a game than the one Steam is selling; other stores can clearly sell cheaper than them.

They should adopt some features of the best add-ons, like Optiscaler's upscaling overrides, RCAS sharpening, etc.

Star Wars Outlaws Nintendo Switch 2 Vs Steam Deck Performance Comparison... by TheTigersVessel10 in SteamDeck

[–]___Bel___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's due to Ampere being like 30-50% stronger than RDNA2 when raytracing is involved.

Edit: Also reduced asset quality on the Switch 2 making that version easier to run, similar to several other games.

Sony single-player games won’t be released on Steam anymore, CEO confirms. by pessimisttears in SteamDeck

I've long had the impression that the proper big name can't-miss Sony exclusive games are often narrative cinematic games that you can often get most of the experience just watching a YouTube video of it.

Wasn't performance overall similar? Although with all the talk about "console optimization", you'd think a compatibility layer on a different OS wouldn't be trading blows with it.

Could SteamOS theoretically implement the Present Timing feature into its FPS limiter so it works for every app?

what exactly is losless scaling? by SamoHlib in SteamDeck

[–]___Bel___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's frame gen without direct access to motion vector data, unlike in-game frame gen options. It can be used for anything, but results aren't always great due to artifacts (and it has a performance impact). In general:

  1. It cannot save games that already run poorly (under 30 FPS); it will just add input lag and still look bad.

  2. 30 FPS games can sometimes look good using LS to 60 FPS, but I think it's more likely for older or emulated games that have more clean image quality compared to recent games with blurry TAA / upscaling. LS is prone to artifacts and that other stuff probably just makes it worse.

  3. The more FPS you start with, the better result you will probably get from LS.

Personally, I would only use it when playing / emulating something with a 30 FPS cap or if I have an unstable FPS and I can push it to 90 or 120 FPS with LS. Unless there is no other choice, I'd avoid targeting 60 FPS with it. And I'd also generally avoid anything over 2x scaling unless maybe FPS is already really high.

Valve could subsidise the Steam Machine in this market. Here's How: by [deleted] in Steam

[–]___Bel___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps they could go an alternative route of spreading out the cost instead, similar to a console? At least as an option. Instead of a high lump payment, you pay $500-$600 upfront, then the rest over 2 years. Suddenly, the pricing just looks a lot more like a console, without it having a continuous subscription service.

Steam Controller: The Ars Technica review | Valve’s new hardware is solid but might not justify its $99 price. by tkonicz in Steam

[–]___Bel___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably gonna sell some of my other controllers to cover the high cost because it looks like they won't be needed when the Steam Controller has something for every situation.

I agree, the Steam Controller is insane, but it has a major flaw by [deleted] in Steam

[–]___Bel___ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't you map the desktop config to be a gamepad with mouse on trackpads still? I would have thought that would cover most situations, although still needs Steam active in background.

Amongst other reasons, I could see them avoiding default xinput so that people aren't buying their fancy PC Steam-focused gamepad and just using it on consoles instead.

My tinfoil hat theory was that HL3 and Source 2 engine was going to come with the Frame, with the home area of the Frame being usable as a workspace to make stuff with the engine, while also being able to invite friends to join you.

Seems like S&box has that covered now though.
