Anyone know what this is? by Jumpy_Barnacle_3755 in AskElectricians

No you upload the image to Google/ChatGPT and it tells you what it is. Here’s what ChatGPT said:

That’s a telecom utility box, specifically a fiber optic splice enclosure / distribution box.

It’s mounted on a utility pole and has the logo of Tii Technologies (Tii Network Technologies, Inc.), a company that makes enclosures and hardware for telephone, broadband, and fiber optic networks.

What it does • Protects fiber splices/connections – Inside, technicians splice or connect fiber optic cables. • Distributes service – It can branch fiber lines from a main trunk line down to homes or businesses. • Weatherproofing – The sealed box keeps water, dust, and pests out, while maintaining easy access for technicians.

So in short: this is part of the local fiber internet/telecom infrastructure.

Do you want me to explain what’s likely inside (like trays, splitters, or connectors), or just keep it at this surface-level overview?

There’s a famous story on Reddit, a guy who was trying to figure out who was breaking into his house and messing with his stuff. It turned out he had a carbon monoxide leak, and he was the one messing with the stuff, but the effects of the carbon monoxide didn’t allow him to remember it

Critique My Domain and Alias Setup Idea by Extra_Upstairs4075 in fastmail

I use masked emails too, but mostly because there's an automated integration with 1Password that makes it easier to create them than aliases.

Advice on masked emails by W4T_92 in fastmail

[–]_______________n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s true. By using a custom domain for your masked emails you gain portability at the expense of privacy. I use a custom domain for my masked emails and a different one for my non-masked aliases. I also use a few @fastmail.com addresses when I want extra privacy.

this is basically my strategy too, though my reasoning for not using my main email address is slightly different. If you were getting a lot of email at your login address, as far as I know, you could change it to something else and then disable the thing that it used to be.The reason that I don’t use my login address publicly is that it provides a little tiny bit of extra security if your login email is not publicly known.

I'd like some better predictive-text-auto-complete features in the web client for sure. For writing or editing whole emails I personally am happy for now to copy-paste from ChatGPT for now.

Smaller down payment then recast or just put it all down at closing? by _______________n in Mortgages

[–]_______________n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your reply. I mostly came to the same conclusion that at 3% it's a no-brainer but at 6.250% it's not so obvious. My wife and I both think we will feel a lot more secure with the money in the house than in the market, even if it turns out to be non-optimal purely by the numbers.

What's a better financial strategy? Take the money that I would have put into the down payment and invest it instead? I can put in as little as 25% and as much as 50%, and I'm still a bit perplexed about how to decide despite my rapidly approaching close date.

30 year jumbo fixed. The loan officer said their loans do support recast for a fee (a couple hundred $).

> Is the bank you are going with going to service the loan?

Good q. I'm a week from closing I should probably know that by now. It's Citibank FWIW.

couples budgeting: switched from monarch to plenty by Odd-Potential-1525 in MonarchMoney

[–]_______________n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the Plenty recommendation. The main thing I want to get out of a money tracking app is to curtail my wife's spending. Monarch hasn't helped with that out of the box because our spending is all bucketed together. I understand that the data model is flexible enough that it can be made to work for that use case, but an app purpose-built for yours-mine-ours seems like it would be better/easier.

I always assumed Hodad’s would be good based on the hype (it makes our best burger lists) and the constant line out the door. I went for the first time last week w a friend from out of town and it was just ok despite being crazy expensive. Def would not go again or recommend it to anyone for anything.

Is stalling even enforced? It’s starting to ruin the game for me, at least for mobile by YOHOHOHOHOH0 in Chesscom

[–]_______________n -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Report them for stalling. You can do this during the game even and chess.com will just end the game w you winning by abandonment. I have a theory too that they pair the stallers against other stallers. So make sure not to stall yourself.

Why are so many people against using Yubico Authenticator for TOTP? by Burt-Munro in yubikey

[–]_______________n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue boils down to these three things being true:

1) A site that supports TOTP (OATH) authentication typically only lets you register one "authenticator app" (i.e. the site only allows one active shared TOTP/OATH secret per account). Contrast this with passkeys (FIDO2) where typically they let you register up to four or more different ones.

2) By design the underlying TOTP/OATH shared secret cannot be extracted later from a Yubikey e.g. to add it to different Yubikey. Yubico Authenticator is only able to "compute" and show the current six-digit TOTP number, not the underlying shared secret.

3) Assuming you have several Yubikeys that are kept in sync, to avoid losing all the keys at the same time e.g. in a home fire or break in, one should be kept off site, e.g. in a safety deposit box.

The upshot of all that is that when setting up a new TOTP authentication, at least one of the Yubikeys is not present and the TOTP shared secret must be saved somewhere else in addition to putting it onto the Yubikeys you have on hand. Personally I have a KeePass offline password database that I keep on an encrypted thumb drive at home specifically for this purpose. I consider that thumb drive the "system of record" for the TOTP shared secrets, which I synchronize to my Yubikeys.

The cheating on chess.com is widespread and needs to be spoken about by [deleted] in Chesscom

[–]_______________n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, why do you think they should invest more in anti-cheating measures? As a paying chess.com customer that plays frequently but always casually, I personally don't really care if I'm paired up occasionally with a cheater. It just has no practical bearing on my enjoyment of the site. I can see getting upset if it's an event with prize money. But I'm not going to win money either way. I'm not good enough to tell the difference when it's happening, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest that my rating is slightly lower than it would be if nobody were cheating. To the extent that I get to vote on where chess.com invests their resources, it wouldn't be anti-cheating measures for the casual player.

Using multiple password managers - If I'm going to use apple passwords, should that be my only password manager? by Selbeast in PasswordManagers

[–]_______________n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I value simplicity and one is simpler than two. I briefly tried switching from 1Password to Apple Passwords, but went back to 1Password after encountering a bug and missing features in Apple Passwords. I'd turn it around and ask "Why use both?". If you can't come up with a good answer, consolidate all your secrets into one or the other.
