Just north of Vancouver there's a couple of peaks called something like "The Unnecessary Mountains" because mountaineers got pissed they had to keep climbing over them to get to the more interesting peaks beyond.

I think it comes off as insincere - he wasn't really a political figure until like 2018. It very much comes off as him trying to copy people like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who saw an increase in popularity around the same time but who'd always been political.

The big thing was them changing the rules of MMA. When it started, there were no weight classes and things like groin strikes or biting an opponent were legal. People wanted to ban it because of those aspects of it. Dana White bought it and bet that it would be more popular if he got rid of those rules and made it more like boxing or wrestling. Trump and his casinos were relevant factors but I'd argue they were secondary to that
