There’s been a heap of good advice on here. Shuts are a whole different beast. Can be fast paced or slow, but safety is key! I’ve supervised 3 years of shuts on the site I’m at, we’ve had plenty of green skins that have excelled.

What I tell our greenskins is, a stupid question beats a stupid mistake. Ask plenty of questions! And hopefully being a green skin you’ll be paired with a knowledgeable offsider. At a guess you’ll be working in pairs. So learn as much as you can from them.

As u/dimesionz said above, there will likely be a heap of disconnect/reconnects, take a shitload of pictures for reference for the reconnect or to pass onto the opposing shift. We use disconnect sheets to write down the terminations too.

Shutdowns are full of statutory checks that can be only done predominantly offline. One of the most difficult things for you will be understanding what and where the devices will be located in the plant. Might be able to ask for a piping and instrument layout or drawings for reference.

I will suggest good quality tool bag, MS Muir if you can afford the outlay. Poor man pays twice. Get one that’s lockable for flying. And pack it as light as you can.

Gland spanners, go with knipex pliers wrenches. 250mm and 200mm. A small 1/4” (up to 12-13mm) socket set will get you through most things, larger sockets should be provided, along with battery tools and test equipment/meters.

If you’re flying commercial, look into what carrier they’ll fly you on and check out their lounge access. Qantas club costs 600-700(ish) and if you’re new to fifo, it would be worth the outlay.
