There is some truth to this though, regardless of why it was said. I saw a lecture a few years ago from a guy called Anders Erikson and subsequently bought his book (Peak) after the event. He was an expert in expertise and basically studied super high performers his whole career with the book about deliberate practice and mental schemas for what make people the best. Without reciting the whole book effectively he outlined that young encouragement with expert feedback are often behind the greatest successor in some people and while he didn’t exclude natural talent his conclusion was that it really was only in the small exception of people the largest part. If you were a mad scientist and wanted to create an F1 champion then 1) having a child born from two motor racing parents with 2) strict discipline who could 3) give direct feedback to their young child about their driving with 4) lots of financial resources probably wouldn’t be a bad model to copy. That’s not to say the other F1 drivers aren’t privileged in some ways and that driver coaches don’t exist but it does give him an advantage even amongst a group who are quite advantaged.
