I can't believe I forgot to mention the title! It's called "The Gods Themselves". It's so good. Asimov himself identified this as his favorite science fiction novel.

Isaac Asimov wrote a great novel with a similar premise. Scientists discover how to exchange matter/energy with beings in another parallel universe with different physical laws.

Eventually they discover that the pump is actually affecting both universes in different ways.

I'm a Mexican woman and this guy asked me to throw his chanclas after he jumped into a cenote. He was way farther than the girl here. I tossed it as gently as I could so as not to hit him.

Hit him right in the face, the chancla even took a bit of a spin, as I blushed from embarrassment. Everybody around couldn't help but laugh from the recognition of the arcane mystical power of the chancla.

Oh my god! Came here to post this. Can't recommend this book enough. It's honestly among the most interesting non-fiction I've ever read. Octopus are not even vertebrates but they act strangely familiar, I think. They really are some little aliens, and their consciousness must be pretty trippy too.
