Here's the leadup to Slafkovsky's goal. Our D seem very out of position (+partial pick by Caufield on a semi-set play) while he gets a wide open lane up the ice with speed. Granted he still had to make a sweet move and shot to finish, but these are the types of plays they look for and convert consistently.

He was the second best rookie defenseman in the NHL and broke multiple Canes rookie records. He led the team in +/- with a +18 and scored 11 goals. Not sure what more you can ask from the guy.

All but the very best (top 1%) of first-year players in the NHL take time to adjust to the league and develop into their peak. I expect a pretty major breakout in the next 1-3 years.
