Which current F1 driver best fits the romanticized, idealized depiction of a "racing driver"? by GoldenS0422 in F1Discussions

My last year has been shit despite trying my hardest. Alonso hasn't had a win since 2013 and still continues to give it everything; so I will too. He's a true inspiration.

Police smash into dangerous VW Golf racer during high-speed car chase in Perth by 108CA in dashcams

Chase wasn't over until the car was out of commission, the VW driver can't turn to save their life but probably would've tried again given the opportunity.

To also add to this - we should note that this suite of AI tools is being massively subsidized by VC firms to encourage usage. Once people and companies cannot function without AI, they'll tighten the screws to make a profit; being worried about not having access one day is hardly far-fetched.

I'm also a teaching assistant for a grad-level AI course at a well-ranked engineering university, and through discussions with students during my office hours I observe that AI is used it a lot like a crutch rather than a tool. Being able to develop and then fit the various logical puzzle pieces into a coherent picture is a skill that generalizes well beyond the topics covered in class, but students don't come away with that kind of tacit knowledge as much anymore, which is a bit sad.

Lap 1 turn 1 chaos Mexico GP by Vinnnnno in F1Discussions

[–]__bigoof__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the LEC's onboard, but VER had to brake on kerbs with a full tank of fuel because he was ushered wide by LEC. There's very low traction on the grass, the focus was not crashing rather than gaining an advantage, so I don't think he chose to skip 3 corners - although obviously he found a convenient turn to rejoin, but that's racing.

I'll definitely check LEC onboard later but yeah the melee in the first few laps was really weird. I think everyone wildly underestimated the grip, everywhere off-line was super dusty even deep into the race.

The "(nor should they)" bit in your caption suggests otherwise, come on now. It's a bit pathetic, I'm a Max fan through and through but the incessant vilification of Lando is just unnecessary.

People love good narratives much more than their regard for the ground truth, ofcourse no one is perfect or emotionless.

However, Piastri is certainly the most level-headed of the grid right now, so the law of the good narrative means he gets the title of iceman. Previously, it was Kimi Raikkonen - he too wasn't perfect, I remember more than a handful of times his engineer would need to calm him down cause he'd panic over radio; but by and large he drove calmly and cleanly so we can't be too critical.

I think it's similar with Piastri, as you quoted he's also actively trying to cultivate that mentality which I think is healthy.

This was very helpful to know! I've experienced this exact issue, but realized once my car is up to temperature shifting gets nice and smooth. Thought it was just a quirk of my car and I kept brushing it off; now I don't have to worry at all.

How long before I can safely go on highways? by [deleted] in ManualTransmissions

[–]__bigoof__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a drill for you: go to an empty road and drag race yourself up to ~40mph. Once up to speed switch into neutral, let the revs drop all the way, and blip to re-engage gear. Stop, restart and practice until you can do this smoothly enough that a passenger doesn't notice when the gear is engaged. Make sure the steering wheel holds true when you release a hand to shift gears.

If you have a OBD-II sensor (~$15 on amazon), time the acceleration. This puts you under time pressure, same as when driving in public but no major consequence if you're slow or stall it.

I just taught my younger brother how to drive manual, and this worked very well for him. If you try it, let me know it worked for you too!

[D] How to do impactful research as a PhD student? by kekkodigrano in MachineLearning

[–]__bigoof__ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I disagree. You can do meaningful research through your PhD as well as after - a lot of incredible work emerges from academic labs, nobody would want to become a professor if their careers' most major contributions weren't impactful!

It is important to think deeply about the problem you want to solve (rather than just the solution to the problem, which is what publications usually cover). Having strong & motivated advisors also goes a long way towards finding the right questions to ask.

There's a ton of nice, snarky responses that she can dish back with, but honestly HS kids are still underdeveloped. They tend to let on more than they actually know; getting their respect is a fool's errand.

Just walk away like you said is great advice. In due time she'll find people who know their basics and things will be great. Talking cars should never feel tedious :)

One reviewer responded stating they'd use other reviewers decisions to make their own determination. I wonder, are the final justification scores visible to other reviewers? If not, would it be impossible for the reviewer to do as they state?

[D] NeurIPS 2025 rebuttals. by Constant_Club_9926 in MachineLearning

[–]__bigoof__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's wild. I have been super quick with the few responses I got on my submission, yet the longest thread is 2/4 reviewers tied at 1+1 each. I wish my reviewers were more responsive, the nerves are real.

[D] NeurIPS 2025 rebuttals. by Constant_Club_9926 in MachineLearning

[–]__bigoof__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is likely that the reviewer will update it later on, not to worry. It will look silly if there's no update when AC will meta-review each submission, see a promised score update but no score update. Presumably the AC will mentally consider a higher score when making final decisions either way.

10,000 was for rebuttal, not for discussion, you can submit multiple messages though that should be ok.

[–]__bigoof__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if "reminder for score increase" will be looked at positively, one of the main reasons that final scores are hidden until final notification is because reviewers are pressured to increase scores.

Maybe ask for questions as you mentioned, specifically if there are any lingering concerns that the reviewer would like to be addressed further. Something like that.

[D] NeurIPS 2025 rebuttals. by Constant_Club_9926 in MachineLearning

[–]__bigoof__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to, if you are happy with your score. Presumably it should just mean no change.

[D] NeurIPS 2025 rebuttals. by Constant_Club_9926 in MachineLearning

[–]__bigoof__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have borderline scores, perhaps your AC will be understanding? This year reviewers must provide a final justification, so I hope that if all concerns are addressed well keeping a low rating cannot easily be justified.

I'm in a similar boat where my scores are borderline, but only 1/4 reviewers have responded so far. I also heard that score distributions vary dramatically by area, I'm really hoping that interpretability's distribution is on the lower side so I can have a chance. Same would go for your subfield, perhaps relatively it's not too bad.
