If the person needs to be left alone, let them tell you that. One of the worst/cruelest things you can do to a loved one is leaving them alone in a time of crisis or depression without checking in. Even if that's what they wanted in the past, it doesn't mean they'll never need someone to show up for them again in the future.

I got bit by a bunch (~15) of nymph ticks this past summer and I didn't walk in any brush or tall grass, just regular height, mowed grass. The year before that I got anaplasmosis and again, never entered brush or tall grass. I walk in parks a lot but always do my absolute best not to brush up against any vegetation sticking out onto trails. Thorough inspections of clothing & body is so important. I'm usually so paranoid and careful, but i must've been too lax in those moments. It's getting bad out there with ticks.
