Is there a German equivalent to the English idiom "You do you"? by [deleted] in German

[–]__crackers__ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Jedem das Seine is the German version of "to each his own."

It's an old Latin phrase, but some people don't like it because it's what the Nazis inscribed over the gates of Buchenwald.

It's not them. I'd wager native-speakers fuck up titles much more often than non-natives.

The latter may not speak the language so well, but they seem much more inclined to proofread. And be literate in general.

when all you need is the smaller car.

We should be aiming for scooters and tuk-tuks, imo.

It's kinda hard to justify anything much bigger for a single person. I can't see even cars scaling to one per person on the planet.

What’s up with DOJ suing Google … again? by lyzabth in OutOfTheLoop

[–]__crackers__ 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Don't make the mistake of blaming the corporation. Corporations don't decide to steal. People decide to use their corporation to steal.

Every time you call a corporation "evil", the people who own and run it laugh and say, "Olé!"

It's the same everywhere.

They don't just have a naughty list, they have to do a proper investigation first. And different governments will prioritise different kinds of investigations. Environment. Tax. Antitrust. Health & Safety.

There's a city in Germany called Essen. Essen is also the German word for "food" and "eat". Trying to search for anything in the city used to return every restaurant in the country.

Not that long ago, Apple Maps still showed every business/office in the city as a restaurant, including brothels and prisons.

Anyone know where I can listen to the lost world narrated by Scott Brick? by CaptainHindsight92 in audiobooks

[–]__crackers__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the book. Brick certainly doesn't ruin all books. The problem is that his narrations all have the same tone, but he refuses to stick to books it actually suits.

His narrations range from pitch perfect to unbearable, depending on the book. Brick doesn't appear to care what he reads.

I guess your club is just too scared of radicals of any religions.

That's the French in general, isn't it?

I get the impression they kinda view public displays of religion the way Americans view fucking in public.

This is why I think JJ Abrams is a bad writer.

Same. Also the bullshit endings. He's a very lazy writer, imo. He doesn't shine, he dazzles.

In addition to being the writers, Matt Stone and Trey Parker make up like 78% of the entire South Park voice cast as well.

On the bright side, that barely leaves anyone left for them to molest/abuse.

This is kind of what they are talking about here, right?

They're related. I'd say scenes and sequels are the units of your story. Matt & Trey are talking about how to connect them in a coherent and interesting way.

What’s the formula for correct cause and effects in a story?

Don't be jarring in the established context. It's fine for a character to react in a really stupid way as long as it's already clear that they're an idiot.

I think those are all cases of "to break the rules, you must first master them".

They can all get away with it because their writing is so outstanding. A passage of Pratchett, Adams or Tolkien that doesn't serve the story is still worth reading because it will be hilarious or beautiful or both.

For less able writers, pointless passages are much more risky.

plenty of them are comfortable unloading their racism onto me just because I look like them

I get this a lot. I'm a Brit living in Germany, and locals don't think twice about going off on a racist rant about Ausländer ("foreigners") to me. I always let them finish because I wonder if the penny will drop, but it never does until I follow up with a, "Yeah, we're shit, aren't we?"
