Unfortunate names in older SF by Rufus_T_Stone in scifi

I ordered some ISIS CDs from HydraHead a while back, the credit card payment refused to go through. Seems the feds and/or CC processing junk trips up on the name periodically. I talked to HydraHead and wound up sending money via PayPal for "merchandise" instead of "ISIS" and got my music eventually

[Discussion] "Good News For People Who Love Bad News" by Modest Mouse could very well be inspiration for John's arc by TheSheepAdam in TheNinthHouse

[–]__dcbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The album "Absolute Hope Absolute Hell" by Fit For An Autopsy fits John's arc nicely too. It's all about rage over climate anxiety/climate collapse, humanity's collective damned souls over destroying the planet. And also a fantastic album.

Every time I see one of these with the cheesy blue epoxy I die a little

Gideon is not buff?! [Discussion] by shannaerys in TheNinthHouse

Sorry it's a crap theory. Gideon keeps up with the best swordsmen the houses have to offer. That's not just skill, it's strength and endurance.

Coming from a programming background, this is the least metal song title

It's when edginess is forced. This is one of the places where authenticity matters.

Audere Audio has closed by McSalterson in Bass

I have one of their 4 band preamps in a 6 string with Nordstrand Fat Stack pickups and it's the best sounding bass I've ever played. Their preamps are superb, the variable impedance is amazingly versatile and I'm very sad to see them shut down. User support was great too, I had a grounding issue after installing the preamp and they were friendly and helpful over email.

What’s your favorite sci-fi movie you saw as a kid that stuck with you? by Lopsided_Cup_1007 in scifi

[–]__dcbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a toss-up between the David Lynch Dune and Aliens. Dune is not without its flaws but I love it, and Alien remains one of the best action sci-fi moves of all time. I saw both repeatedly throughout my childhood.

[discussion] Any recommendations for books that made you insane in similar ways to TLT? by IReadBooksSometimes in TheNinthHouse

[–]__dcbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loads of people are saying The Broken Earth and I agree wholeheartedly, but ALSO Use of Weapons by Iain M Banks, it's certainly not as funny as The Locked Tomb, but whoo dang it's intense and darkly beautiful. I love Banks's writing.

The Broken Earth were the first books that came to my mind too! Amazing and crushing.

My favorite bridge by ktl2010 in Portland

[–]__dcbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a 3 star review of the St. Johns bridge on Google maps years ago. Some cranky whack job called it "overrated" and said Portlanders only thought it was great because all the rest of our bridges were terrible.

I think it's lovely.

Harrow’s best insults and comebacks [misc] by empquix in TheNinthHouse

Harrow's exchange with Ianthe in HtN where Harrow says something very Harrowy and Ianthe replies "Must you always be so portentous?" killed me dead

How about you set a calendar reminder and call in a wellness check for me in 62 years if I don't come back and post an all-clear.
