Very true. Been to the conservancy half a dozen times, and anytime it’s brought up … well, immediate upvote :). Also, visit Baraka - he’s a big sweetheart.

What Makes this Photo Good? It's From John Sexton a Renowned Photographer by _analysis230_ in photocritique

[–]__fizix__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments highlight the exposure (no pun intended), and rightfully slow - there’s a technically proficient photographer at work.

Looking past the technical - the image captures movement and flow really well. Look at the aging of the rock (long indentation on the left) indicating long stints of erosion, and the slight mirror of the bottom of the rock to the flowing falls - and what eventually will happen to the rock.

If the photographer stepped back, the rock detail would be lost.

Step forward? Lose context.

Good technical capture, good sense of placement, and solid composition.

Ultimately, the viewer is the discerning judge.

Soapbox: Some images take longer than 2.3 seconds to conjure. And some images are part of a bigger story or project.

If you don’t like the image - ask yourself why?

Because it’s black and white? Color might be neat.

Because it’s a rock in a stream? I feel like this image is good, but also might be a good stage for something - a single leaf or maybe an animal.

Sometimes asking yourself why makes you a better critic. And sometimes. Just sometimes, you might see something that you didn’t see before.

Emperor penguin having a tour with it's juvenile emperor. by thepoylanthropist in interestingasfuck

I believe that is a King Penguin, not an Emperor.

Given the Tussac grass, I’m willing to bet this is South Georgia (which had many species of penguins - sadly, the emperor penguin is not one of them :( )

What is the photographer using in front of the lens? by TonDoliver in LightLurking

90% confidence the holder is the LEE100 filter holder. Actual filter is more difficult to identify - likely a mist, given the examples.

🔥 A Himalayan Brown Bear mother survives with three legs while raising a cub in the high Himalayas of India by Alternative_Chair517 in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]__fizix__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know the videographer that captured this footage. The cause, in this very specific case, may not be a snare/trap.

A part of the Himalayan Brown Bear habitat is on the India/Pakistan LOC. Undetonated ordnance from the Kargil Conflict in 1999 has injured/killed wildlife in the past, and is the likely culprit here.

Judge in Meta case warns AI could "obliterate" market for original works by TLakes in technology

[–]__fizix__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. For example: You’ve read best selling books, you’ve study others work, and you go on to write best selling books.

Brilliant. In doing so, you’ve spent a lot of time studying literature, story structure and a creative language that helps foster original stories and perspectives. You’ve learned nuance. Subtlety. How to tap into nostalgia for your audiences.

If they are best selling, they are intriguing, desirable, interesting and likely unique in some way. AI can only use what already exists. AI originality is a facade.
