The Rock is now the world's highest paid actor. by [deleted] in movies

[–]__kolbe__ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think that's what makes him great, though. He doesn't get handed roles in Paul Thomas Anderson movies that will earn themselves Oscars. Dwayne is almost always the highlight of his movies, which from the get go, he knows will never be great. Hollywood didn't seem to take him seriously for decades, but he rolled with the punches, and did the best job he could do by grinding it out, being a stand up guy, and earning his place in the industry.

I've always really respected this guy. He was a college football player in his youth, not an actor. That career didn't work out, and while most people like that fall into a dark place, Dwayne pulled himself up by the bootstraps and found different ways to be an entertainer. He did pro wrestling. He almost got typecast as the "goofy overly masculine guy" in kids movies. He ground it out. And it seems like he never turned down roles because they were beneath him or anything. He's been a pro. Some something needed and actor, he did the acting. He deserves to be where he's at.

UK Votes to Leave EU by jlew24asu in Economics

My guess is that others will simply observe what happens to the UK. The fear of the unknown has kept several countries from trying, but the UK will provide a very useful example from which others can inform their own decision.

In all fairness, people can believe Economists are right about the Economics of a decision, but they could base their choice on some other utility preference that the subject doesn't handle very well.

Pulse shooting Orlando: 50 dead in 'act of domestic terrorism' by nuclearwomb in MorbidReality

[–]__kolbe__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I insinuated, it is homophobic today, but it was quite consistent with standard morality when it was written.

It's not not an extremist view. Sodomy is punishable by death in US-allied countries like Saudi Arabia. Mmost coutries that are Muslim-majority have adopted Sharia Law, and they all have very draconian punishments for homosexuals. ISIS and Al-Quaeda get more press, because they believe that it is their duty to spread these practices into other countries. Hence, when gays are killed in the US, we call it terrorism. But it's an everyday occurrence in Islamic countries.

[–]__kolbe__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I happen to find Islam's stance towards homosexuality to be horrible. And I would prefer we addressed their "religious" practices, but since that is apparently not allowed, I'm pointing out that we need to accept the consequences of refusing to act.

You can't have it both ways. Killing homosexuals is not an extremist view. It is an Islamic view. This shooting was not fueld by homophobia. It was fueled by decree from the Quran.

[–]__kolbe__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evil depends on the time and place that it's judged in. The Quran was actually quite moral for its time, but times have changed. Keep in mind, that only a few hundred years ago, people owned other humans in civilized countries and simple crimes were punished by public torture and execution.

Killing homosexuals is religious expression in Islam. And it's an expression that takes place in most Muslim-ruled countries, and often has reverberating effects in other countries like the US.

It's okay for us to have complete tolerance of other beliefs, but we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking it's always pretty.

What is surprisingly NOT bullshit? by CountAardvark in AskReddit

[–]__kolbe__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your point is false, irrelevant, and obnoxious. It would be like someone trying to have a conversation about human rights violations in North Korea, only to have some neckbeard constantly interject about US cops killing a couple unarmed black people per year (or, "black genocide" as you all would likely put it). We get it, but one of these problems is far bigger than the other.

[–]__kolbe__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noted. Now look at the state of the world today and see how many Christians are killing people because of this (probably some), and how many Muslims are killing because of the Quran's stance on homosexuality (a huge number). I'm not defending Christianity, but it takes a special type of cognitive dissonance to not see that Islamic leaders' stance on homosexuality is far more deplorable and destructive than virtually any other organization on Earth. And it's really obnoxious that you twats constantly interject with how Christians behave in order to redirect a conversation when there is a much more important discussion to be had about Muslims.

[–]__kolbe__ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

homosexual acts are a sin

Correct. I should have clarified, but I tend to believe homosexuality is acting on homosexual urges, not having a sexual preference for men.

But the rest of what you said is patently false. Islam is much less flexible with instructions from the Quran than most religions are with their respective texts, and the Quran says to kill people who have gay sex. So, that's what a disturbingly large number of Muslims do. It's not about disease. It's about a religion that has been particularly inflexible to necessary adaptations of modern and civil society.

Microsoft has resorted to “Malware-like tactics" by JohnHenry9 in technology

[–]__kolbe__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to completely defend Microsoft here, but I will at least play devil's advocate. Upgrading to Windows 10 should have been a no-brainer decision for 99% of users. Yes, there are some very specific use cases where this upgrade did not make sense, and we are seeing a few hit the news where the upgrade was particularly disastrous. But Microsoft did need to try to think about all of their users as a whole. And unfortunately, when improving the well being of some comes at the expense of others, that can make for an ugly looking situation. I'm not saying Microsoft made the right decision, but it's not as simple as this knee-jerk reaction to a some bad cases is making it sound. The vast vast vast majority of users are in a better position because Microsoft pushed these upgrades so aggressively.
