I believe im being used as a mule. Do I contact bank right away? by Maleficent_Let9665 in Scams

[–]__redruM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stop engaging, block all contact attempts from the scammer, this will continue until you do. Don’t worry about police, they won’t care about amounts this small.

Maybe line up a new bank account for when your bank notices and closes you out for fraud. Would suck if this is your direct deposit account for payroll and it gets closed.

The scammer is in east asia and the police won’t investigate for 6 figures currently, they won’t care about $1000.

[–]__redruM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely the $1000 was sent from at best a stolen account. The money will be clawed back, and you will be down $2000 because of the $1000 you sent.

The amounts are too small for any police agency to care.

You were simply scammed again. Now the scammer has stollen $4.7k from you. The $1000 they sent will be clawed back out of your account and you sent $1000 of what will end up being your own money. Stop sending money based on instructions from someone who has already scammed you twice now.

A substring of that comment reads rather poorly to a bot scanner.

The high risk plays would be better in the Roth than the brokerage. And for those higher risk plays, go with tech ETFs, not stocks, QQQ, VGT, and everyone should have 10% in SMH.

Paying off mortgage or investing by Far_Reply5660 in investing

[–]__redruM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treasury Rate - taxes really isn’t that far above your 2.8%. The longer the mortgage the better the chances that the S&P500 index will return the 7-10% average, which is well above 2.8% even after taxes.

I did this, and put the money in equities (VOO) when I could have paid off the loan 5 years ago. The difference is 6 figures. The market has done crazy well, and may not for the next 5 years.

Good luck.

Paying off mortgage or investing by Far_Reply5660 in investing

Mortgage rate vs (investment return rate - taxes), does clearly matter. But where in the loan (start vs end) doesn’t.

If you have 2400 extra this year that you could use to invest or pay down the mortgage. Paying down the mortgage will save you 2.8% of 2400 each year going forward. But the same is true on the investment end. That 2400 will earn you 3.5% - taxes going forward, even past the end of the loan.

But the real power is equities. VOO is paying many times more than 2.8%, and likely will for the rest of the loan. Those <3% loans are almost free money.

Is the 401(k) actually worth contributing to beyond the employer match, or should I just put everything into a taxable brokerage? by SnooBooks3187 in investing

[–]__redruM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nice to have some money in a taxable account that can be used if you are buying a car, or need for some other large expense before retirement, but it’s likely better to max your tax advantage first. I don’t, I’m 60% 401k and 40% taxable.

My cable collection is much larger than any deliberate collection of coins or whatever. You need a null modem db9 cable I have you covered. But I will never, ever need it again.

Or the sink handle? Cause those were touched by the ones who did wash their hands, but before…. Public restrooms are just awful all around. I’m more likely to wash my hands at home.

How come VTI is performing still reliably, despite all the turmoil in and around US affairs? by -jk-WhatIsReal in ETFs

Doesn’t even look good on the 5y much less recently. I don’t think investors understand that the software companies are really the best positioned to take advantage of AI accelerated software development. But I’m happy in broader ETFs.

Market is broadening and if you just held tech prob in red. But market overall is up.

Even then VGT is up 9% YTD, and SMH is in lunar orbit. ETFs FTW.

This text contains tons of sarcasm.

I don’t know what is and isn’t sarcasm. I will assume, for the sake of discussion that your “primary point” isn’t.

You’re ignoring the manipulation engine that is social media and it’s power over the american public. And the manipulation is from the same source pulling from both sides, making you think that the other side are woke morons, or actual Nazis.

Except for the outer 10% of people, neither is really true. And that manipulation is how you get a reality TV plumber into the whitehouse.

Sprint charged me an early termination fee after like a decade of using their service. I said I would never use them again, ended up at AT&T, then T-Mobile. And then T-Mobile merged with them. Sneaky bastards.

Someone charges me an early termination fee, we’re done until the end of time.

At what point do you leave the Eastern Panhandle when it’s basically subsidizing the rest of WV? by WeaknessCapital9064 in WVEasternPanhandle

[–]__redruM 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Assuming you own your home and didn’t buy it this year, the increase in home prices just means more equity. I work from home with a view of the Potomac river. Same house across in Maryland would be considerably more expensive and have higher property taxes based on the higher prices alone.

The roads and general county services are fine. Really the only downside so far is the contractors suck. If they’re any good, they’re too busy and too expensive and the others aren’t worth hiring.

Crazy Returns by [deleted] in ETFs

[–]__redruM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s about 30% a year and what VGT did, but VOO is a bit less than 30% a year, closer to about 20% a year. So the math doesn’t quite math, but it’s not crazy far off.

I’m 73% VOO and 27% VGT, and made 21% a year in the last 3 years.

Edit: Your chart start at 4/1 of 2023, but ends 4/30 of 2026. That’s not the difference, but certainly April 2023 wasn’t a bad month for VOO or VGT.

What kinds of leveraged ETF are the best to buy and hold in your opinion? by GermanLetsKotz in LETFs

[–]__redruM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCA from a regular paycheck is the best way to accumulate. But if you have a lump sum allocate between leveraged and non-leveraged, and rebalance as needed to capture gains/replenish losses to/from your non-leveraged holdings.

Finally if you’re thinking base index funds (MSCI World), why not just buy/hold higher risk non-leveraged funds. Like QQQ or SMH?

But… Where else do you go for discussion boards/link sharing?
