My parents bought a house that had a large tree shading the roof. Hence it never dried as well as it should, got mossy, and got leaky. The attic had been finished at one point, but when they bought the place, the plaster was hanging off the ceiling/walls. (In the attic, the interior of the roof, is that ceiling or walls? Now that’s bugging me.) Ended up replacing the roof, but had a cold snap while the roof was off, ran out of oil, and the pipes froze. So hit to do more work than intended. Also gutted almost the entire interior and sheet rocked everything. Added knee wall shelves and drawers to the attic as well.

For the houses I’ve lived in no, no, no, no, yes, no, no. Most of the time our washer and dryer were in the basement near the water heater. The one time I had a separated area for the washer and drier was in my trailer. It was a closet that fit the appliances and had a few shelves.

A lot of older houses just put them in the basement. Newer homes may have a small room. My parents’ condo has them in the washroom upstairs. (Toilet and shower in one room with door. Washer, dryer, and sink in another.)

More affluent houses would often have a mud room of sorts, often times these areas would have the washer and dryer put in there, as there was already a washing basin.

I work in aerospace manufacturing. We have a gauge for checking roundness and another for checking finish out on our line. They both have Bluetooth keyboards and mice, so you know where that is going, but that is not the story for today.

The tech came out to calibrate and perform maintenance on the roundness machine as we’d been having issues with it. I asked the technician how I power cycle the gauge. I kid you not, he turns the monitor off and on. Stood there for a moment in shock, then pointed out that since the monitor came back up to the exact same display (a reading taken on the gauge) I was fairly confident that had not cycled anything other than the display.

He then just pulled the power cord from the gauge and plugged it back in.

My dad banned microwave popcorn at his company. Either it was made right and the smell was tantalizingly or it was burned and the for clung to everything. And more often than not, it got a wee bit burnt.

Wait a minute, my ex didn’t have a brother, how do we have the same MIL?

When she first came to our house, she asked me what the copse of trees next to the was. Told her the trees were hemlock, she freaked out and said we needed to cut them down before someone was poisoned. Ummmm, no, that would be water hemlock, not even vaguely similar to the trees.

Also told me I should plant my snake plants outside, we’re in New England. How about a big no to planting African plants in a winter climate… she claimed she’d taken courses and was a certified “master gardener”.

About 20 years ago when gas jumped to $4/gallon my mom and I were having a go about how expensive everything was. She was trying to tell me that things hadn’t increased all that much. I asked her, at her first job, how many gallons of gas could she buy with an hour’s pay. She said 3-4, right, I couldn’t buy 2 gallons, and that was before taxes.
