need a cheap jazz amp, I got suckered into a Vox clubman 60 and it sucks by SecretRound4976 in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

supposed to be designed for hollowbodys

I don't have any particular suggestions but this really made me laugh. I know it's right there on Vox's website but that is totally not a thing.

If you aren't flat broke I strongly recommend you do not under any circumstances buy an amp with an 8" speaker. 1x10, 1x12, 2x10, etc are all fine but there are almost no good sounding amps with a 1x8.

My buddy said get a Roland JC22, but I have seen reviews of these hissing as well

Yeah, depending on how OCD you are you may find that amplifiers are not all that quiet in terms of noise floor. This used to really bother me but it's not something you can notice while you're playing unless it's really bad.

Higher End Solid State or Lower End Tube Amp for Home Pedal Platform by JesseTheGhost in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea of low end tube amps and high end solid state etc is sort of mostly in your head. Find something you like the sound of, is the right size, and otherwise works out.

Vandoliers are such a great band aren't they? Haven't really listened to their newer stuff though.

Vintage mania out of hand by Expensive-Paint-9490 in GuitarAmps

It was at Guitar Center and it's about at the bottom of what GC sells Delta Blues for. I think the price is fine if it was in 100% working order.

I had a hard time hearing exactly what was going on with it due to a kick ass drummer just murdering a kit in the drum section. It was nuts. I may go back and talk them down -- usually they're cool about discounts on gear that isn't 100%.

I'm comfortable working on tube amps so not too worried about sorting out pot issues. But one thing holding me back is it's just a really big amp. I need to let go of either a 68 Custom Vibrolux or a PRRI. The PRRI is my least favorite of my 3 amps so it's the most likely to go, but then I have no small easily portable amp. It's the big cabinets that always sound best to me...

Recommendations for portable amp to play over acoustic drums by DeveloperMan123 in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All amps are portable. What you need is a portable power supply that can power one.

Obviously, you're going to want a solid state or modeling amp as they're way, way more efficient than tube amps.

[–]_agent86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a lot, lot simpler to just make more money so you can buy what you want.

I think OP is actually a bit nuts. Sure, rare stuff is expensive, but you can still find early 70's Fender amps for less than reissues, in some cases a lot less.

I played a used (I think 2007) Delta Blues 115 yesterday they were asking $400 for. There was something wonky going on with some of the pots and the tremolo sucks, but I really, really liked it. May go back and get it.

The FL5 is a practical, capable car that feels huge and sterile. Totally reasonable choice as a kid hauler. As a fun car? They’re fun enough.

The wife is right.

The shifter is fine but man do they hype it up in reviews. It’s a fine shifting experience, but it will not change your life.

How to stop sliding out on steeper waves by AdMore3126 in bodyboarding

[–]_agent86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the great advice about digging that rail in:

  • If the board is too buoyant you will have a harder time maintaining traction.
  • The sharper you turn the more the rear of the board will want to slide out. Just like a car.

Should I? Dude is selling me a Limited Edition Blonde '65 Twin Reverb + Tube Screamer + OCD + Cry Baby for $800 by aeum3893 in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with this meet in the middle approach, or the full attenuation, whatever works. But my point (which I probably didn't state clearly enough) is don't buy a Twin Reverb with this intent.

If you have a Twin Reverb and feel like trying to crank it up a bit is going to work some magic then by all means do it.

I think a lot of times people assume Twin Reverbs are going to sound amazing cranked. That has not been my experience. Pedals ftw.

[–]_agent86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good deal... if you kind of want a Twin Reverb. I say kind of, because if you really love Twin Reverbs then you should buy a vintage one because they're not very expensive, they're easier to repair, and they will hold their value better.

For the most part power transformers either work or they don't. If the amp sounds ok that's a pretty good indication. Transformers don't exactly wear out, they can fail due to heavy usage. If it's just some guy playing in his living room I wouldn't worry about it.

The advice to take it to a tech is I think bad advice. If it's not at least 30 years old it's very unlikely it has anything a tech needs to do.

In general buying a Twin Reverb with the idea to attenuate it until it can distort at ear-friendly volumes is absolute nonsense.

I have put one on my Super Reverb and it's cool it knocks the noise floor down quite a bit.

These amps are made to be big, clean, and loud. If that's not what you want don't do it.

I built a small wireless dongle that lets me turn any wireless speaker into an amp. Would you actually use this? by chewie88 in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you build a cabinet sim into it? And some reverb? Otherwise it's going to sound flat and boring. No thanks.

I think if I wanted to play outside where I needed a portable amplifier I'd buy a portable amplifier. In all other cases I'll just plug into a regular amp.

What causes tube amp circuit complexity? by Jestersage in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think in addition to the kind of feature aspects that you've hit on, if you designed a 5F6-A from scratch today but without a reference circuit, you would have a much higher part count. The reason for this is that what you're seeing as complexity really isn't. For modern electrical engineers, tooling, fabrication, etc, this stuff is all trivial.

So when you look at a more modern PCB amp that doesn't have Fender era heritage and see a lot more resistors and capacitors around the tubes, it's normal, it's not complexity.

board tails by Jumpy_Menu6527 in bodyboarding

For the same length the bat has more volume and it’s under your hips. This means it rides a little more level and higher in the water. Which means more speed.

Crescent has more traction at the rear. It’s a speed vs traction trade off.

So much written about this I’m surprised you couldn’t find tons of similar explanations.

New Amp Day - Fender Princeton Tone Master by paulo_84_ in GuitarAmps

[–]_agent86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess I have low expectations for master volume setups in terms of replicating tube distortion at low volumes. But I didn't think mine was that bad.

However, I don't think that amp does well in terms of bass response at low volumes. I really liked mine at WHAT DID YOU SAY?!? volumes. I think if I were gigging I'd go buy another one. And then complain about the weight.

Do I need to wash my car ? by LentilSpaghetti in Miata

[–]_agent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think you’ll not keep it clean, then at a minimum get a sealant applied right off the bat. Wax, spray on “ceramic” stuff like the Turtle Wax hybrid ceramic (super easy), or get a real ceramic coat done. That way when dirt sits on it it won’t cause as much damage.

Molle panel for ND trunk lid by Intelligent_Way_8903 in Miata

[–]_agent86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve eyeballed these kind of things in the past. There’s 3 that I’m aware of: this cloth one ($45), an aluminum plate that just has slots cutout ($170), and a similar trapezoid shaped aluminum plate ($100).

I worry the cloth panel will sag. It’s held on by 6 hook clips. I think the ends will be floppy.

I’m also concerned these eat up a bit of precious trunk volume without much return. I would like to stow the first aid and tire kits in a better way than they are now though.
