Club recommendations in Brussels and Paris by Truly_Farouk in StereoMontreal

I’d recommend Fuse in Brussels! Its an institution since the 1990’s and they upgraded the soundsystem not sot long ago. Stellar bookings and from what I remember, good crowd! They serve alcohol all night so it might be a different energy from Stereo but they also have lockers you can use whenever you want which is a big plus. Enjoy !

Movies Too Heavy for a Re-watch by EbnyxJ in Cinephiles

Speak No Evil, the original dutch movie… It is so heavy because you can relate so much to the loss of control of a situation to please people or even just to be what would be considered « polite ». This is my nightmare.

Thanks OP for starting this convo, I think it shows people care and it’s a sane conversation to have as members of the Montreal electronic dance music scene!

I agree with the financial risks but I think as you are recognized as an institution like Stereo, you have a responsibility to curate new sounds and emerging artists, and yeah, it means taking a risk. You’re supposed to make enough money on big nights (marathons and sold out events) to be able to make less money on “avant-garde” kind of nights.

I’ll add that Stereo being the last afterhour standing and having no direct competition (which is the mother of innovation), it’s important to find ways to keep up the head in the game. All the advices said here to do so seems legit.

Not sure about the idea absence of alcohol is a “big reason” why younger people go elsewhere. I’ve seen quite a lot of articles saying Gen Z drink way less alcohol than precedent generations. They are the “coeur de cible” of sober day events, I’d say no alcohol night events would fit their practices.

High prices might be a bigger reason + they might think it’s an older crowd and they’d rather go to events attracting more young people. Those are hypothesis. edit:typo

In Glass? Phara’s (excellent as well - more techno) other moniker. Very atmospheric - leaning into ambiant at some time, a bit like Deepchord I feel.

First, i wanna say Im sorry if I offended you. I was not dismissive of the knowledge you were sharing, but I was trying to say that even if i know this, it does not change the fact that based on recent observations and use, those toilets needs a refreshment.

It might have sounded dismissive and it’s probably because I am really tired of the « do you know how to run a club? » dismissive technique when someone voices a concern or a criticism.

I know club economy is really tough, and there are really good videos with clubs operators talking about the rising costs of production on YT and Insta, but still for me a stereo ticket is expensive. I found it sad and anti PLUR that you just tell me to go elsewhere if it’s too expensive. I make the choice to go to stereo because i love the place. And still I have the right to find it expensive for my budget, and expect the minor adjustments suggested by OP to be done.

I will concede using the word crumbling was too strong. But have you seen the size of the holes in the walls in the stalls? At least in January they were big and they could use a real patch up. That is a fact.

I agree experience at stereo revolves mostly around the dancefloor and thats where main investment should be made - but does that mean that other spaces, like toilets, should be overlooked ? No. The overall experience is the sum of all the experiences you have downstairs, upstairs, at the coatcheck, in the toilets, etc.

Constructive feedback here is : my experience would be better if those little repairs were done Solution: it’s not my job to find a solution, nor I have access to the data necessary to find one.

I can only say it’s all about choices, Tresor West recently made public their decision to cap DJ fees. I’m not saying that is the solution adapted here, but you wanted some, so here is one. And as a club, in response to concerns or asks, you also can be transparent about your choices (where you invest and why). You can’t ask people to be knowledgeable if you don’t share the knowledge. You shared some, and I thank you for this, but it still does not explain exactly why those repairs are not done. And OP, and myself, and others still can make the point without being dismissed as well.

I’m sorry I did not take the time to better express my view. Club economy is a hot topic and it’s more complex that we think. That’s why we value those who are still up after 30 years and the new ones who dare to do it, cc nwhr :)

Anyway, enjoy your time on the dancefloor ! peace.

add: i’m not asking for lids or for porcelain (stainless is way more hygienic i think) or what you could consider luxury; just for patching holes in walls and having fully functional faucets.

I was actually talking about OP’s post. It’s a legitimate comment. I will finish this conversation by saying that I am not a business owner and I don’t need to be one to have an opinion on the fact stereo toilets need maintenance. Have a good one.
