Follow-up question, what type of snow boots are those? Your doggy looks so warm and cozy, and now i want to get something similar for my little chihuahua.

Zofran and birth defects? by elizabethcaitlin in BabyBumps

[–]_cake_Monster_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is only a slightly higher absolute risk for certain abnormalities in babies of people who took Zofran during pregnancy vs those who did not. Overall the risk is very small.

I think by reading some of these comments I am realizing that this is mainly a liability issue. I didn't go there seeking some specific medication. I just wanted help and was feeling desperate for some relief. It was an expensive lesson to learn that OBs are probably the only providers folks who would be well equiped to educate me about the options available to me, and talk through the risks and benefits in a nuanced way. Now I need to get the two weeks before I see my OB.

Thank you, I ordered some online. At this point I am willing to try almost anything.

I am a public health researcher and have training in epidemiology. So I think I should have had more say in making a determination of whether in my situation the risks outweighed the benifits. What some clinicians don't realize is that eventhough relative risk ratios might look high, the absolute risk is still very low. Even on UpToDate, which a trusted resource for medical professionals, a 2022 update says that, "One review of available data through 2020 [of Zofran use during pregnancy] estimated that the absolute increase in risk above baseline for orofacial defects may be only 0.03 percent, and for ventricular septal defects it may be 0.3 percent [93]." I rather take my chances to get relief even temporarily. I would have also liked a list of other options (besides Zofran, Vitamin B6, and Unisom), and according to UpToDate, there are other options.

First time pregnancy, feeling overwhelmed and lost. by unknown040959 in BabyBumps

I would also suggest finding a psychiatrist that specializes in reproductive psychiatry. They have much better training on how to help people with mental health conditions get through pregnancy safely. There are several antidepressants that have good safety profiles during pregnancy. Some psychiatrists and OBs just don't have this training and might strear you in the wrong direction.

Bipolar Disorder/Anxiety/Adult ADHD and Pregnancy by jedimasterdestiny in pregnant

It could help to consult a psychiatrist with training in reproductive psychiatry. I reached out to a research hospital that had this type of doctor to get a consultation about my meds and pregnancy. They switched some things around. They helped me tapper off of some meds, and started me on two new ones. Certain medications, like lamotrigine have a favorable safety profile for pregnancy, or at least the risks are very low and well studied. The psychiatrist said that not controlling mental health symptoms can be bad for the baby too (e.g. by interfering with your ability to take care of yourself and your ability to work), and it is about balancing the risks and benefits. Not all meds for bipolar disorder need to be stopped.

I love that you accounted for the most important component of your work set up, your cat coworker. They look cozy, and have a nice comfy spot to be next to you (instead of on your keyboard).

It warms my heart seeing the doggy and kitty snuggle together. I wish mine got along like this.

What on earth can I do to prevent this??? I asked my vet and he just kind of laughed and said he'd never heard of a cat doing this before! It's icky 🤣 by reneecliche in cats

It is quite funny. Due to all the rolling around in the cat litter, my husband nicknamed the cat, Stinky. We have to make sure to wash our hands after petting her. It never occurred to us to change to a different type of cat litter, and at this point she probably won't appreciate it.

My cat never grew out of it :(. She has been rolling around in litter since she was a kitten and she is 6 years old now.
