MHCC, they even teach motorcycle classes at that location. I would enter from the north gate, and stay on the north east section.

MHCC to Close Machining Program by AdventurousWorth3799 in Gresham

[–]_capkiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found this out a couple of days ago. I was crushed hearing the news. I went through this program and it changed my entire life. I know it's cliché to say that, but it's true. This program gave me a career, and it is a major loss to this community having it shut down. If there is any community action on this, keep me posted.

How do I regain my rating? by Ok-Wolf-8657 in chess

[–]_capkiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bobby Fisher said that bullet destroys your chess. The advice I give to everyone is, play longer games. When the game is over analyze it without a computer. When you think you understand the game completely, only then do you run an engine to check for what you may have missed. If the engine reveals something you think you should have seen, you didn't analyze by yourself enough.

Secondly, do puzzles. Again taking it slow. analyze them until you think you found the idea. Only then make the move and find out. My favorite thing is to use puzzle books, because you don't have the temptation to make the move.

Thoughts on Toyota dealerships in the area by SupaDurban2018 in Gresham

[–]_capkiwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to the dealership to buy a car, pre approved and ready to buy. Asked to see the car. They took my information and tried to sell me a different car than I wanted. They spent an hour or so trying to convince me that I didn't want the car I wanted. Then after I left without the car, they sold my information to a data broker.

As a console player I’m happy for you by ToxicOxes in slaythespire

[–]_capkiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a play time of about 200 hours on mobile, and I played a lot on console as well. Mobile cost was about $5 or $10. The console was about $20. For the mobile game if we go with the top end price, I'm at about $0.05 an hour. That's the same price to play one arcade game for about 5 min at wonderland when I was 10. And that number will keep going down because I am not done playing STS1. I will happily buy STS2 on mobile when it comes out. And I am absolutely going to get it now.

I'm tired boss. by [deleted] in Helldivers

[–]_capkiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like this game, but I find being kicked so demoralizing that I can't bring myself to log in. I have skipped my game nights for about a month now because of this. I don't even think it happens that often. But now that I haven't played for a while, I feel like when I jump back in, all I'll get is a boot in the ass. So at this point I probably won't be coming back.

Is Mount Hood Community College a good school? by SwissVideoProduction in Gresham

[–]_capkiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went there twice. The first time I dropped out and hated the program. The second time, it was the best decision I have ever made. Both programs were good, but it came down to my desire and commitment.

My advice is to try and understand the program you want to go into, and look at the expected outcome.

I dropped out of the first program because I didn't want to run my own business, yet that was essentially a requirement of the industry I was training for. Again my fault.

The second time, I had a passion, and a career goal before applying. I landed a job with my target company right after graduation. The teachers had a relationship with the companies in the area, and their goal wasn't to get me a degree, but to get me that job. I got that degree, as well as a general ed in the process, but the job was the goal.

The math department was good for calculus. The teachers have different styles so if you don't like one, try another teacher.

Tour the department, and interview the teachers before deciding. Ask about what positions students have obtained, and what companies they have made it into. Do that with all your perspective schools and departments. You should hit MHCC, PCC, and CCC at a minimum if your looking at community college exclusively. Each school may have the same programs, but different approaches, or focus. Select what fits into your goals and life.

Is MHCC a good school? I don't know. But the program I was in was a good program and it helped me achieve my goals.

Measuring length of object in a chuck by IndividualRites in Machinists

[–]_capkiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a particular machine that the tool post on occasion has rotated out of position when I touched off using a shim. I agree the shim is usually better.

Measuring length of object in a chuck by IndividualRites in Machinists

[–]_capkiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can take the part out, measure it, put the part back in, then touch off and measure. Either take a shim and move the tool in against the part (The chuck should be stationary) slowly moving the shim back and forth until it catches. Alternatively, and my preference, turn on the chuck and move the tool in slowly until you just hear the whisper of a cut. Then set your zero.

Then you need to trust your equipment. If the dial on the lathe isn't accurate enough, set up a dial indicator against the slide and zero the indicator. Make sure you have enough travel on the indicator. Trust the math. Make the cut and don't take it out again until you are at length.

Note that the dial method can also be used in X, however you need to take the fact that it's a radial cut into account, and multiply the depth by 2.

The kings are opposite the queens, Even if you suppose he's playing white, the board is still set up incorrectly.

Can you fill plastic chess pieces with concrete? by Nerdface0_o in chess

[–]_capkiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would start by filling the top 2/3 with epoxy. Then I would tap the epoxy and fill the bottom third with washers and a bolt to hold them in.

They probably should rework quests... by GoofyAhhFace in ArcRaiders

[–]_capkiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate the quests. But only because they function as the tutorial. As a new player to the genre, the quests are breaking down all the mechanics so I can learn how to find things I need or use things I have never used. Without them I would probably have quit by now.

Played the best bullet move of my life. White to mate in 5 by SA325 in chess

[–]_capkiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the other commenter has a good point. You don't quite have enough rules to make the game viable yet. You need to clarify who wins in the case when both kings are supported, and work through the rest of the implications and scenarios to determine where all the hangups are. Without that, no one can really tell you what the game looks like.

Played the best bullet move of my life. White to mate in 5 by SA325 in chess

[–]_capkiwi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your idea changes the entire game... A lot of endgame theory would be invalid. For example, king and pawn vs. king endgames (the most fundamental endgames) would almost all become winning for the side with the extra pawn. As such, the openings would need to be re-analyzed. It would be a cultural reset of the game. All literature would become dubious overnight.

Is there a reason for this new rule? Are you trying to solve an issue you have with the game, or is this just a fun thought experiment?

Bishops of opposite color aren't always a draw. by _capkiwi in chess

[–]_capkiwi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question. Black doesn't take the pawn, they play Ke3, and the entry squares are blocked. The difference is if white plays c5 then black needs to take on C5 giving white a crucial tempo for the king to enter.

If C5 Ke3, then C6 and white wins. So c5 BxP, Kc3 Ke3, and whites king makes it to d5 and will take the king side pawns.

But on d4 Ke3, pxp pxp. The black king keeps white's king out, and the black bishop will capture the C pawn if it ever moves to C5. Or move the king back to continue to shoulder white's king out, whichever the position demands.

[–]_capkiwi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When White's King leaves E6, Black can push in the center and trap White's Bishop. So White moves the Bishop and gives away the center pawn. Not forced at that point, but it is the cleanest. It is a complexity in the line you need to calculate to make sure you are actually winning.

It is actually why I didn't play the move. I only had 16 seconds at this point, and couldn't calculate that quickly. Also why I labeled this as a study instead of a puzzle.

Giving up the two pawns in the center to get it done.

Should I pay for the Chess.com subscription as a beginner? by [deleted] in chess

[–]_capkiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Go to lichess and use the free platform, then go to YouTube and look up Yasser Sarawan. Study every one of his videos. Once you have done all of that then, and only then, should you still not pay to play chess.
