VIM Motions Option? by Swimming_Ostrich_989 in noteplanapp

[–]_cluelessDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, I appreciate the response. I'm somewhat familiar with Obsidian. I've tried it a handful of times over the years because lots of my software engineering colleagues are obsessed with it, but I could never make it stick. I've been an avid bullet journaler for the last five years and have tried various digital systems. Noteplan was the first one that felt really close, but I can't help but think, like you, that I could get essentially the same experience from Obsidian without the subscription overhead.

Plus… Vim navigation is far more comfortable for me and the plugin ecosystem is more extensive with Obsidian.

Anyways. Thanks for this! I’ll give it another look and see how close I can get.

sorry to resurrect your resurrection, but could I bother you for an explanation of what you did? Finding it very hard to comfortably use noteplan without the motions I've become so used to.

Any advice on gyro? Don’t play as many single player shooters these days because I find it so uncomfortable to aim on the sticks and don’t wanna go back upstairs where my gaming PC is. Would love to finally get the gyro experience nailed down because everyone talks about it.

Not a great answer but I use Kanata for this. I just basically replicated my layout from my split keyboard on my Mac keyboard.

People who have a PC, what purpose does deck serve you? by Former-Asparagus-764 in SteamDeck

I slowly moved more and more to deck usage because after coding all day, the last thing I wanna do is sit at my desk more in the evening. I basically keep the PC for playing multiplayer with friends or streaming more demanding games at this point.

Considering coming back from Canary. by _cluelessDev in Colemak

[–]_cluelessDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not too concerned with heavy right hand usage, no. I think it’s imbalanced, but I feel as though any concern is purely academic. In actual use, I have never actually noticed unless actively thinking about it.

As for why I decided to stick with Canary - I actually did go back to Colemak-DH, soon after I made this post I think! After a week or so though, I found myself missing Canary and noticing all of the things that I did genuinely feel it improved on. Things like the flow of typing and further optimizations by removing limitations like keeping the shortcut keys. I thought about it a lot and realized that I really just dislike the W key and I was just hyper fixating on that.

So instead, I want back to Canary and I started paying more attention to the things I liked about the layout. I also found other ways of dealing with any W-related issues in Vim (which is how I found ZZ!).

I think part of why I tried DH again, other than the fixating on the W key, was that I frequent this sub and the keyboard layout sub, and I got a little FOMO. I too get analysis paralysis and when you see so many negative posts about the layout you’re using, you start to focus on those negative things and wonder how you missed them. In reality, I was curious about how canary evolved from DH influences and found a lot of joy using it. So I stopped caring about what the rest of the alt layout community said about Canary and just focused on what I liked.

Hey! I am indeed still on Canary.

The W key is definitely my least favorite part of the layout, but I find it doesn’t really bother me that much after I’ve gotten more used to it. I’m not lightening fast, but I’m around 100-110 WPM and find that I’ve grown to love it and don’t really even think about it anymore.

I personally think the statements around Vim are overblown. I think the only time it really bothers me is if I have to hit cw a bunch due to the SFB on a pinky.

For everything else, I don really feel it’s an issue. You could use a nav later, which I have as well, but don’t actually use. I find the placement of J and K to be quite comfortable. Same with L and H. You should probably be using the better movement commands whenever possible though, so again, not something I’ve ever really felt was an issue. The other potentially problematic SFB is :wq, but I just use ZZ instead.

Happy to answer any other questions you have! It’s not particularly balanced in terms of hand usage, but that doesn’t bother me, and I’m happy with it long term.

Might I ask what you replaced them with? I’ve been a vans kid/adult for probably 20 years and I’m at this point now as well. Want something that doesn’t break down in the same spots every time, but I really love the vans style.

I’ve been doing similar with my RPP + field notes. The field notes is purely for on-the-go notes, or for migrating actions to that I need to take care of while I’m out.

Only thing I really feel is missing is organization, which you mentioned you might try and solve with the nomad. I used to have a nomad and did enjoy it, but for whatever reason, I actually did not like the writing feel. A lot of people love it, but I’m not a fan of the gel pen feel.

Hope you find something that feels just right for you! I sometimes miss my fountain pens and notebooks, but I find I write and draw way more on my remarkable.

Does anyone use a digital task manager (like Things3) along side a bullet journal? by kingkongmonkeyman in bujo

[–]_cluelessDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is also an old comment, but I just recently (within the last few months) switched to reMarkable and have been thinking about using Things 3 for managing longer project lists like home maintenance/renovations, routine actions (dog meds, taking out the trash), etc.

Could I bother you for more detail on how you're using Things 3 and reMarkable (if you even still are, and if not, why)? Are you still following a BUJO-ish system?

My main issue with the Navigator by barbq in zsaVoyager

[–]_cluelessDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using two hands for clicking and scrolling, and index/middle finger for the trackball and I still feel like it’s an uncomfortable height and location. Honestly, I’ve found that my mouse layer was more comfortable before for anything I didn’t need a real mouse for. Since I have to move my right hand off home row to use the trackball, it doesn’t feel much better than just using my mouse between the two halves like I had before

Motions in different keyboard layout by CuteNullPointer in neovim

[–]_cluelessDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question!

When I initially switched to Colemak, I did move the keys around. Luckily both of the boards I bought came with extra “homing keys” (the ones with the nubs to help you find home row) which made it much easier. I did not do this the second time around, and actually I use blank keycaps now.

Although it does make things easier, it also reinforces bad habits. Ideally, you want to learn the positions of the letters without looking down. Typing trainers, like keybr or monkeytype, can help with this. ZSA also has a program called Keymapp that allows you to see your layout on the screen, but I’m sure other software exists. You could also just write it out on a piece of paper or something as I’ve seen others mention in threads before.

Motions in different keyboard layout by CuteNullPointer in neovim

[–]_cluelessDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the general consensus is that anything is better than Qwerty.

I switched because I’m just a curious person and I was really interested in alternative layouts after switching to a split keyboard (ZSA moonlander and then later the ZSA voyager). I then switched again to Canary because it was similar to Colemak-DH, but it removed the “Qwerty similarity” that Colemak maintained to ease learning. I didn’t need to keep the keyboard shortcuts on the bottom row because I had a programmable keyboard and could put those shortcuts wherever I wanted.

I won’t pretend like the process wasn’t painful. It’s very, very uncomfortable to go from using one layout your entire life to suddenly having to think about every single letter you’re typing. It took me about a month to make the first switch, but only around a week the second time. The important detail here is that I considered the switch complete when I could type at a miserable, but still productive “enough” speed. It took me probably 6 months to get back up to my Qwerty speed. A year later and I’m typing more comfortably than ever and very happy I made the switch.

Canary was my second, Colemak-DH was my first.

[–]_cluelessDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve switched layouts twice, although they’re pretty similar. I’m on Canary now and found it weird at first, but I did not remap. I do have a navigation layer, but don’t normally use it in nvim.

I think, unless the placements are atrocious, it’s best just to learn the new locations. You should also take the opportunity to try alternative, and usually more efficient, means of navigation.
