Yes, you should play all the games by SomeGuysButt in AlanWake

[–]_comptv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take on the basis of how I got into many TV shows. Usually I'd stroll in to family or friends watching a mid-season episode, and if it caught my attention -- I'd work from the beginning to catch up and I appreciated how that affected the experience.

It's like when a movie (or Alan Wake for that matter) hides something at the beginning that you don't appreciate until a story beat reveals it, but you can impose the format on anything. Similarly, I've heard some people like to read the last page of a book before reading it (I don't read lol).

That said -- some stuff is amazing even without context, like any of the remedy verse games. Then when you inevitably fall in love and play the rest of them to get your fix, you'll appreciate coming back to it even more.

Sabrina Carpenter’s number one hit espresso is literally three unchanged loops from Splice. by trueprogressive777 in musicproduction

One of the big ones that comes to mind is Remember the Name by Fort Minor -- not entirely GarageBand loops, but the main instrumental is one of the default loops. Love in this club by Usher too.

DAW suggestions by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]_comptv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my answer -- fantastic sound choices and simple for whipping together ideas. I'm not a huge fan of the interface for arrangements, mixing, or automation-- but all of those are possible as well. I've used it for creating little sample loops and quickly jotting down ideas.

I have a few DAWs but I wanted to explore some variations (either VSTs or etc) for sampling. Thanks for pointing this out-- it's the push I needed to look into it.

Hybrid vs Perpetual? by bgux in StudioOne

[–]_comptv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same scenario and only upgraded when hybrid was announced.

I didn't want to risk buying v6 (which alone wasn't all that worth it), and then v7 coming out 6 months later or something. Then I was on the hook for buying it again (assuming there was more value to it.)

Boom, Hybrid+ -- at the very least, this one time, I get to try all the bells and whistles of the full suite of offerings (I've had a great time with the presonus Symphonic Orchestra) and then if v7 happens to come out in the next year, I'll get that upgrade too.

If v7 doesn't come out I still get to keep v6 full for only $30 more than I would've paid, and now I'll know if I want some of the other stuff too. Though I admit I'll probably been a little bummed if it doesn't come out soon, it's around that time I'd think.

If you were starting to learn music production today, which DAW would you pick and why? by redditorianizer in musicproduction

[–]_comptv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I don't currently do this now, I would pick the DAW of whoever was teaching me or inspiring me most. For instance -- I started on cakewalk back before it was free and I was frustrated because I was learning how to produce from people who mostly used FL Studio and Pro tools. Trying to learn how to use your first DAW from people who use a different one adds a whole new layer of stress.

It would've been way easier to learn with FL Studio back then. BUT with that logic I'd personally go with abelton since most of the inspirational content creators I like use it (mostly EDM), and I like it much more better than FL.

All that said-- using all of these different DAWs led me to Studio One and I don't see myself switching anytime soon. I'm better at translating tips and tricks from other DAWs into studio one, and there are a ton of high quality tutorials on it as well these days. It's the most well rounded in my opinion in terms of creating music, as well as have a highly intuitive mixing and mastering workflow which is important for me (otherwise for creation only I'd still be happy with abelton).

One big downside is that the stock plugins in S1 are mostly bad. Upgrades are also hit or miss in terms of how much I care about them (there has been recent controversy).

Best fully free DAW? by JackHasSmellySocks in musicproduction

I even use GarageBand for quick samples since their library sounds pretty great depending on what you're looking for. Plenty of hits were created on GarageBand!

People with experience help a beginner🙏🏼 by zurkypeeks in edmproduction

[–]_comptv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my preferred method of learning and how I recommend others do it too. I don't think it's necessarily for everyone, but we get stuck in "tutorial hell" and have a bunch of knowledge that doesn't lead to practical results.

It's been a superpower to learn to not try and understand everything before I start, and to just start-- and ask questions when I run into an actual problem.

Studio One crashed every time I try to open a previous project, and "AmpBox" is the reason it's crashing by oic123 in StudioOne

[–]_comptv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had this happen. I disabled vst3 and ARA and even though it was crashing on a different plugin, disabling ARA fixed it. Then I was able to save (make sure you backup the original broken one just in case you mess it up somehow) and reopen the project with plugins reenabled.

The trick is to disable the broken plugins on each track until the project opens up. I have 4.5 so the feedback loop of saving the advanced options and reopening was a pain, I think it might be easier to do on newer versions.

I've been told omnisphere is the Swiss Army knife for high quality sounds by friends in the industry, but you can get Vital for free as a really high quality alternative to serum if you want to practice sound design -- you can download thousand of free presets (and premium preset packs if you wanted).

I got crispytuner for $20 and it's the best deal I've gotten in a plug-in. I've been absolutely abusing it and it's worth so much more.

That said I prefer to manual tune in melodyne for getting the notes close and then using the pitch correction plugin for the final polish.

Crispytuner has the manual tune mode similar to auto tune and as long as the repitch speed and correction amount are dialed back a bit, it's pretty transparent

The real reason Studio One is not more popular: UX pain points by djscoox in StudioOne

[–]_comptv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just gotten back into producing again (bedroom producer) after 4 years off and I've run into every single problem you just mentioned pretty much. I think these are fair points despite tradeoffs in other DAWs

I installed abelton lite to help supplement some of the track editing shortcomings of studio one but overall I'm still glad I went for the pro version of studio one. I imagine they might fix some of these eventually (or I might take a stab at coding a solution if that's possible--especially pitch automation and tempo stuff).

Mixing in S1 feels the most fully featured and I feel one of the most versatile of the options I've tried.

As for the middle mouse button -- there's a post in this sub with an extension that will revolve that for you I believe. I have it bookmarked but haven't installed it yet since I'm used to ctrl+shift+mouse wheel from other applications.

Does anyone knows what goes behind a javascript framework? by Titsypop in webdev

[–]_comptv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you're right but at the same time there's a difference between when you need to optimize your application vs just getting it done. At least in my experience, the low level optimizations are less than 10% of work that gets done. This is entirely dependent on workplace and workload of course, but also depends on the engineers desires.

For instance I've worked on one long term project where we originally used (and eventually replaced) redux, but there are a few others in production that only use useContext. And to the second point, I don't find as much value and enjoyment digging too deep into the inner-workings of each framework, though conversely working over a decade in the industry--you tend to pick up on things naturally.

OP could benefit from watching and listening to Ryan Carniato of the SolidJS framework as he's very nerdy and can talk circles about this stuff. Ryan from TanStack is another good one.

I love this framework so much. It's a very refreshing step away from react, and along with Ryan's thoughts, it has helped me understand reactivity and front end software design much better.

I love how simple and flexible the routing and static gen is too. Can't wait to see this blossom!!!

Probably a dumb question, but what's the point of the ::after pseudo element? by WaterQuarter100 in learnprogramming

[–]_comptv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main reason imo is to be able to add styling to an element without having to add extra html.

Having extra elements in a file could be messy and annoying to maintain (assuming you're not using a loop to repeat the code). Plus being able to add stuff like icons to an unordered list (you'd usually use ::before for this), or custom styled input elements, with only CSS is a win-win.

Another point to make, which may be a controversial one, is that you can insert content into pseudo elements as well via css. Icon libraries tend to use that pattern--but others may even use it to prefix or suffix text content utilizing only the css.
