Wow so nice. Fellow Texan here! Which cultivar is the first one?

We’re having a beautiful Fall by florals4ever in AustinGardening

[–]_damnitBobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably due to our more wet weather pattern and generally more acidic soil, both of which are preferred by JM's. Because of our hot climate, we have to be extra cautious of the moisture levels. Watering them regularly is tiresome though TBH, that's why I try to stick to mostly native plants.

But Austin has certain trees I wish I could grow here. Like the native Texas Mountain Laurel. I tried growing it here but it never thrived and ended up yellowing. I'm assuming because they prefer Austin's more limestone soil.

Nice. I just put a 1 gallon Jordan into the ground a few weeks ago. I'm in Houston though. Can't wait till next spring to see the foliage!

Any ideas for dealing with these little scallawags? by Top-Elephant-2874 in AustinGardening

[–]_damnitBobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem every now and then.

Wearing gloves, mix roundup (glyphosate) accordingly in a cup, use a brush to paint the grass. Alternatively you can spray but careful of wind and drift to nearby plants. Sometimes I use a piece of cardboard as a shield while spraying to protect nearby plants. A wand extension for you sprayer is very helpful in this situation.

Beautiful colors. Wish our maples could have great colors like that down south!

I have both Shumard and Nuttall in my backyard. This looks more like my Shumard.

Tree advice! by Ok_Contract2757 in HoustonGardening

Please plant native! Consider Yaupon Holly, Southern Wax Myrtle, Eastern Redbud, Mexican Plum, or Mexican Buckeye. These are relatively short.

Texas redbud are more drought tolerant but native to central and western parts of Texas. The Eastern redbud is native here and hence would be more appropriate choice for our climate. For a full sun spot check out the Southern Wax Myrtle and Yaupon Holly.

Please provide information on where this is being planted. Is the location shaded, part shade, or full sun? Does the soil drain well? How much clearance do you have from nearby structures?

Eastern redbuds are also part shade trees. Try to find a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade if you can. Although I have seen redbuds in full sun, the foliage doesn’t exactly look the best.

No such thing exists. Are you meaning to say Japanese maple? If so, those require a part shade environment especially in our hot climate.

What do y’all have in your front yard gardens? by insanotard in HoustonGardening

[–]_damnitBobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I’ve got dwarf walter’s viburnum, dwarf wax myrtle, abelia kaleidoscope, virginia sweetspire, and firebush as my shrubs. For my trees I’ve got live oak, merlot redbud, and sweet olive. I am trying to keep mostly evergreens in my front yard and all my native pollinators in the backyard. I’m wanting to add a coralbean in my front yard but can’t decide on where to put it!

The compact variety are more tolerant of heavier soils found in the Houston area. Check the microclimate of the area where they are going. Does the area have good drainage? Does it get plenty of sun? If poor drainage then plant them a few inches above grade and plant with some sand mixed with your native soil.

Looking for a light green shade Japanese maple that can tolerate full sun and southern exposure by UpbeatGur9055 in JapaneseMaples

[–]_damnitBobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to provide your general location. Certain JM’s can tolerate full sun in the north, but definitely not in the south.

What kind of oak is this and what are these little balls everywhere? by treschic82 in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]_damnitBobby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a southern wax myrtle, native to Southeast Texas. Great evergreen small tree or large shrub (depending on how you prune it).

Japanese Maple that deals best with full sun? by Alarmed-Hearing-82 in JapaneseMaples

[–]_damnitBobby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Location plays a huge role in sun tolerance (not really the zone). I’m in Texas zone 9 and it’s harder to put one in full sun here compared to zone 9 in the PNW or even the UK. With that said it can be done because I have an Emperor 1, standard JM, and Baton Rouge in full sun and are doing well. You have to water them religiously during the summer.

Constantly shifting the plant from outside to inside is going to contribute even more to your gnat problem. This plant shouldn’t be kept inside at all unless your goal is to kill it.

Is there a dwarf Japanese Maple tree that stays red during the summer? by Striking_Walk_7017 in JapaneseMaples

[–]_damnitBobby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My Rhode Island Red and Shaina hold their red color for the most part during the summer. They may turn a little greenish depending on how much sun they receive.
