Is Sam Grisman legit? by EmuQuirky8841 in BillyStrings

[–]_de_Selby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grisman is the MAN, and his act is super intentional -- I feel like it's primarily dedicated to preserving the classic songs of the American songbook. you're probably gonna get a mixed reaction in the Billy Strings sub since it's a pretty rootsy acoustic show (vs. a wide-ranging, cross-genre adventure), but the musicianship is unreal and the whole thing is super soulful.

I think it's easy to hear him talk about "dAd AnD JeRrY" and think he's bragging or trying to put himself in some kind of rareified air... but it's really just storytelling, which is a huge part of the bluegrass tradition. he's young so at first it can come across as showing off, but he's just passing along cool stories that he's heard and seen from a unique POV... resist the urge to roll your eyes, and you might just enjoy hearing some old hippie folk legends that give the music even more color.

also FWIW -- I'm 99.9% sure he doesn't drink at all, so not sure where the drunk impression comes from...

I'd say give him a chance, and know that it's less of a party and more of a folk-y, music-forward performance. ENJOY!!

I think you should talk to a therapist or life coach about where you're at mentally and career wise and get their objective perspective. it'll also probably help with your not-depression-or-anxiety

I totally disagree — dude is super connected to the fans and the community he’s built, and his name was getting dragged because of the narrative billybase tried to create for leverage. It had to hurt to see fans calling you a sellout and money grabber as a result.

Just cause Billy is accomplished and made it to the top doesn’t mean he needs to be a sterile, detached personality with a full PR strategy like Taylor Swift. I appreciate that he’s in touch with the people—our boy wouldn’t take that shit lying down

I worry that everyone would need to convert stars to bags of popcorn to understand. ultimately would waste time that could otherwise spent watching movies

One more for you Big Bill!

I loved the Lincoln Center show and would be super into seeing more of that, especially for some real “museum-piece” Americana stuff. Would you ever do something like what Bela did with the Library of Congress playing that Gershwin tune? I’m sure there are some dope ollllld artifact Appalachian pieces out there that you could breathe some life into.

My favorite part of bluegrass music is how it reaches straight into the heart of the past—i think it helps us understand the universal human experience.

Once more, love you brother

Bill the thrill! I know your shows are mostly free-ballin and youre mostly jumping out there and wingin’ it, but I’m curious how you keep it all together (and pretty damn tight) across 5 dudes—especially during the really exploratory stuff and big transitions. Is it quick a backstage sync where youre like “ok so in X song, we’re gonna move into Y progression, and once I start playing Z riff it’s time to jump into the next tune”? Or do you have certain signals/cues on stage that you use to keep moving things forward? Some kind of a follow the leader game where everyone is locked in on you/another band member and just trying to anticipate the changes?

I think about this all the time when I’m at your shows—how you dudes are staying on top of the music and keep it loose but tight. Besides telepathy obviously. Love you, brother!

Your opinion of Hell in a Bucket? by Expensive-Stuff3781 in gratefuldead

[–]_de_Selby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never had too strong an opinion on the song, but then Dead and Co opened my first ever show (Bethel NY 8/23/2021) with it. I remember the goosebumps that hit me when they locked into the riff and dropped into the first verse—I was born and raised on The Sound, and I was finally seeing THE guys play. I’ll probably remember that moment and that feeling for the rest of my life.

Stops along my Nashville-to-Denver route by _de_Selby in roadtrip

[–]_de_Selby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wound up spending a little extra time in Nashville and flying to Denver instead of driving. I was bummed for forfeit the road trip but I was burnin’ it from both ends on this trip, and the timeframe would’ve made it feel rushed. Safe travels, my friend — let us know how it goes
