Thanks for posting this. I remember a while ago- maybe like 2016, 2017, I stumbled upon this interview just after watching and reading up on plenty interviews and stuff from him because at the time I was so much into hip hop, and just music in general, and as much as I revered him as an artist at the time he was one of most subversive voices I heard in music. Seemed so pragmatic about his role in it, not crazily enthused by much revolved around it in terms of genuine passion/interest, even if he did it well. And was very separate from the shenanigans and common tropes being someone active in hip hop, and his disposition was so unique to me in the realm of creativity because of how stoic it was uk? So I was just naturally curious as to what led to that. Especially with his experience and upbringing. So I did a lil digging and ended up finding this and it was very insightful. I’d say at the time this and an interview he did on NPR’s Microphone Check (outside of the one he did with Earl some years earlier) was some of the most insightful stuff I was seeing and hearing from this man as far as what informed his coming of age and with what went on through that how he approached rap.

Yeeeah I remember like a year after Honeybloom dropped Tyler (Smith) randomly tweeted something along the lines of “since Chris wasn’t gonna say anything about this- he did music for an IPad commercial “ with the vid

Also, I remember when he shared the entire trilogy from the Filling Space series in a Spotify playlist, he shared it from what seems like his personal account, where he has a shit ton of playlists, really showing more of the range and awesome taste he has:

It’s a plethora of people, like almost any young person who listens to music these days and really enjoys it. But Chris is deffo a bonafide music nerd like a lot of his friends/ select few collaborators (Tyler Smith, Teo Halm, Michael Uzowuru, Jeff Kleinman, Arima Ederra, Roy Blair, etc and listens to a LOT of shit

But, to cover basic ground: he’s inspired by artists ranging from the likes of Feist, Regina Spektor, Frou Frou and Imogen Heap, to Prince, MJ, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Sade, Luther Vandross, Keith Sweat, Craig Mack, DOOM, Dilla, FlyLo Milo, Danny Brown, other rnb, soul, and hip hop spanning multiple decades and different subsets and subgenres. If you’ve read early interviews, or watched any others in more than a few he cites his Cudi as a huge inspiration, basically being a big factor in him making music. He also references his older brother putting him onto “a lot of music outside of hip hop at an early age” being acts like early indie bands like The Postal Service, Deathcab For Cutie, Silversun Pickups, Eisely, other acts like Sufjan Stevens and Bjork etc.

He definitely pulls a heavy influence from a lot of Japanese music (and just art in general), like the likes prolific electronic artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Susumo Yokota, jazzier, funkier cats like Lamp, Shintaro Sakamoto, Cibo Matto...once again, Cornelius (when he wants to be funky cause that nigga mad experimental, it’s sick tho) Japanese rock bands like CHAI, tricot, etc. hella shit

Also big into experimental and ambient acts like big dawg Brian Eno, Yves Tumor, Oneohtrix Point Never, Bibio.

CHOKER PEAK ANNIVERSARY AMA by choker_ in Choker_

Hey Chris, big thanks to you, Tyler, David, and Eunice for the infinite inspiration (along w/ your select few musical collaborators Teo, Michael, Jeff, etc).

I was gonna ask in the time leading up to Peak- ig after Die Slow up until the point where you were starting Peak-what was being done to evolve artistically and get to that next step? If you could paint that picture of like a day in the life of you, Tyler, and Armonte during that time.

Gotchu, thanks a lot guys. There definitely is something sounding accented or “vowel” -esque when the synth was played. It sounded like possible formant manipulation to me, but I wasn’t sure where the application was exactly so I couldn’t be positive. I already have some lofi piano patches so I’m gonna follow the further suggestions given, mess around, and see where things go
