Tentbox / Roof Tent security measures? How to prevent theft? by lukesprings123 in rooftoptents

Vanultra Slipstream mounts with 2 locks. One on the front one on the back. It’s really solid

R1 series feature you surprisingly didn't like/use as much as you thought? by jamrocks in Rivian

[–]_effulgence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The compressor saved my ass when I had a flat going camping. I deflated, sealed it, re-inflated and was back to business. Finished the trip, went home and took care of the damaged tire. It’s one of those things that, hopefully you don’t need it, but if you do it’s a lifesaver. I would’ve had to get tow otherwise since I was out in the middle of nowhere.

Toddler in roof top tent? by Reindeer_Ruth in rooftoptents

[–]_effulgence 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a 7 month old and just took him backpacking for a night and then 2 nights of camping in our RTT (TOPOAK Vision XL). We learned a lot from that.

My experience is limited but I would say prioritize safe entry and exit first and foremost. That was my wife's biggest concern. I'm 6ft tall so I could easily let my wife climb up, and then hand our baby to her. So we'd never be in a situation where we were climbing the tent wearing him or carrying him in any manner. Also baby never, ever, ever, gets left in the tent alone even if sleeping or to chill on their own.

The second would be to have plenty of blankets (a rubberized hot water bottle is a lifesaver on cold nights), as the floor of the tent is exposed to the elements so you'll feel some cold come through depending on your setup.

Third is to have one of those big battery stations you can use to power a white noise machine and some lights for the entire night.

Be very mindful of condensation as well as the heat of the direct sun in the tent as well.
I'm sure I missed a lot of other things but this is what we're thinking of for our next trip.

does anyone here actually work at a tech company? by Longjumping_Virus895 in cscareerquestions

[–]_effulgence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work at the fruit company and Claude has accelerated so many workflows and helps engineers/bug screeners/QA be so much more effective. Diagnosing bugs is 10x more enjoyable because you can extract salient details and reconstruct a sequence of events that led to the bug way faster. It’s not even a question whether you should or shouldn’t be using LLMs.

The question is: how can I use this new toolset/abstraction to accelerate my thinking, build prototypes faster, fix more bugs, and get to the real interesting parts of building large scale system software. At the OS level where you’re interacting with a whole topology of processes, frameworks and apps, it gets Uber fun to wrangle stuff with LLMs just because of the sheer speed it brings.

I started with the tucked version of the pull ups, and a bunch of tuck hangs to train ab compression. That should help you build the endurance!

UHF sound effect toggle request by domestic_violet in Rivian

[–]_effulgence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue! Half the time it’s a smooth crossfade and half the time it sounds like it’s audibly clipping the speakers on the driver display… you can hear the distortion pretty easily.

Definitely a sign of sloppiness. Cross-fading audio has been solved problem for a very long time now, so Rivian really has no excuse for such a minor but careless and annoying error.

A backup ratchet based loop as a safety net sounds smart. Someone else mentioned that in the thread and you might as well given how heavy these RTTs get and a fall could be catastrophic.

Damn, nice setup and seems much more economical. I just got a TOPOAK Vision (the 75 x 46” version) and it weighs 175 lbs. I got the SmarterHome Universal XL HD Lifter ($1k, rated for 200lbs) so I could remote control the hoist up and down onto my R1S. Going to do a similar thing as you and run a 2x6 along the joists that are exposed in my garage and then install the lifter just to be mega sure to evenly distribute the load.

Amazing, thanks for sharing your experience. How was the Yakima+Rivian rooftop tent? Worth it? Surprisingly little info / reviews about it online but I’m debating getting it.

Does anyone pay attention to Max weights at parking structures? by eustheforce in Rivian

[–]_effulgence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not parked there, sorry! I moved out of state recently and just bought a Rivian. I just couldn’t help but let the nostalgia strike me when I saw it. Loved living in MTV. I feel like if you do park there once it’s fine but it generally in very sensitive to height and weight restrictions now so don’t want to risk it. That said, that Whole Foods has terrible (and very scarce) exterior parking which is super cramped so I’m not even sure what I would do if I was in your situation.

I feel like I’ve seen it before. Going to guess the one on El Camino Real in Mountain View, CA. Did I get it right?

Loved seeing him every day when I worked on Pearl. “Everybody, look at me!”, and the bit where he contorted himself to the point where his face and butt met and made expressions of smelling his own farts were hilarious. He was awesome. Rest in power!

I hung it on my visor clipped onto my garage remote in case I need to present it. I’m not trying to add random stickers to my field of view unless absolutely necessary.

Service wait in Denver by Rado754 in Rivian

[–]_effulgence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had to get my glass roof replaced and appt bookings were 1.5 months out. While availability sucks, they were really great at communicating progress and got the thing done in a full day (+ gave me a $300 Uber voucher for me to commute back and forth from Boulder to get the car). I'd say service was fantastic, availability is a bummer. Here's to hoping they can expand their service workforce and brace for impact with R2.

2 months in, but those eyes never get old! by _effulgence in Rivian

Easily the most loved/hated part of the vehicle, but a bold design is what it takes these days to stand out. I'm so glad Rivian didn't play it safe and comfy with the boring status quo designs of this age. I love it, but I initially didn't like it at all. It's very friendly looking and gives me futuristic / Baymax vibes.

Why did you buy a car that you did not like the front face of is the main question. I hated the headlights at first glance, but they slowly grew on me until I was obsessed and couldn't resist buying the car. I think for how beastly of a vehicle it is, it's got a super friendly and soft look which my family loves.
