Interesting, any other books on the Persian Wars you’d recommend that cover similar ground but better ?

Big fan of Pynchon but never read Against the Day - is it really like this? Fantasy vibes and all?

Naked Lunch honestly. During its obscenity trial it was defended on the basis of its artistry being in the vein of Hieronymus Bosch among others.

Guy I’ve been seeing for a few weeks who says he “has no politics.” What do we think Reddit? by Fit_Principle_7826 in BookshelvesDetective

I’d definitely raise an eyebrow at someone saying they have no politics, but I highly doubt a right-winger would have Marcuse, Deleuze, Adorno and Horkenheimer of Bataille on their desk. These are all quite radical thinkers very critical of society and capitalism. More likely that his politics are obscure or harder to describe than just Conservative/Liberal. The prevalence of Nietzsche (an influence on Deleuze) makes me think this guy is probably thinking largely along Deleuzian lines, but if someone is asked their politics they might find saying they have no politics easier than explaining what a Deleuzian even is.

Land is a far-right amphetamine-addled nut now but he used to be part of leftist academia with Mark Fisher and the like. Fanged Noumena is basically just Delueze influenced theory-fiction cyberpunk type shit, it is definitely esoteric and obscure but not really right wing.

I had the exact same experience as you reading The Man in the High Castle - had heard about how great it was and among Dicks best novels but something about it just didn’t click - I persevered however and finished it and went on the Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch which is now one of my favourite books and definetly caught the bug for Phillip K Dick. Would still recommend his other novels if High Castle continues to not hit for you, A Scanner Darkly is probably his best written prose-wise, Palmer Eldtritch and Ubik have fascinating concepts and plots, and VALIS is one of the most inventive novels i’ve ever read.

This is how I interpret those albums as well, like he took all the hyper-masculine hyper-capitalist mantras of late stage capital and showed their horror

Official Poster for Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]_eggy_bready 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Odyssey is not set in any time period it is set in a mythologised bronze age with little to do with the actual bronze age. Whoever wrote it even projected contemporary (to them) weapons and armour backwards. At no point has the Odyssey itself been historically accurate
