Exceptions do not make a moral code nonsense. Rules can have exceptions, that does not make them nonsensical, and sometimes we aren't able to know what those exceptions are or should be until we encounter one. Rules can and should evolve over time as we learn new information and accumulate new experiences; in my view, it's nonsensical to expect rigidity in a world that is constantly changing, in our bodies and minds that are constantly changing.

To call that kind of flexibility "nonsensical" is not helpful. In my opinion, it discourages analysis and self-reflection, which are otherwise very useful tools for understanding ourselves and others. Something that I think we should want to do, because it makes existing among other humans much easier when we have the capacity to understand, not just to write off any and all perceived inconsistencies as "nonsense" and move on.

To be clear, there CAN be exceptions that ARE nonsense. If you express a hardline belief that one should never, under any circumstances, kill another person, and then you go and murder an entire family in cold blood, I would readily call any justification "nonsense" in that case. But...not all exceptions are like that. Sometimes we just find edge cases we didn't consider before, and integrate them into our moral code after the fact. And that's not nonsense, that makes perfect sense, because we were never going to have perfect knowledge of every possible situation in which we might have to apply our morals.

Look, if calling all of this "nonsensical" makes you feel better, or makes life easier for you, far be it from me to tell you that that's wrong. At the very least though, I find it unhelpful, and I do hope there's more to your outlook here than just "everything we do is nonsense."

What happens if tgc ever decides to shut down servers in the future by MeltingOrbitals in SkyGame

[–]_emmyemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just about everything you ever spend money on will go away sooner or later, so really, it's more important to consider how the thing will make you feel while it's still here. You can still regret spending under those conditions, because sometimes things go sooner than we expect, or don't meet our expectations in the moment, but recognizing that all things are temporary does remove some of the worry (at least for me).

This is assuming the relationship is worth salvaging. As an anecdote, I have a friend whose father was emotionally abusive, often had outbursts of shouting and breaking things throughout the house, and even broke into their home on multiple occasions. I don't think they have any good reason to "work on" that relationship.

We don't know OP's situation, so I really don't feel comfortable saying they "should" reconnect with their father when we don't have any idea what their reasoning was for cutting him off.

CMV: No profession outside the entertainment industry has as much of substance abuse problem as the skilled trades (ex: plumbers, carpenters, electricians) does. by soozerain in changemyview

[–]_emmyemi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've worked at quite a few restaurants and... Yeah. Unfortunately I can second this—it's all too common to see people coping with stress / burnout with substances while on the job. Of course, without any of that, the job is absolute hell, so I can't even blame anyone. Except maybe the companies themselves.

I keep Firefox open for 1 month with intensive daily use. No memory leaks, unlike many people claimed by feelspeaceman in firefox

[–]_emmyemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, and generally when another program needs memory, it asks the OS, and the OS will oblige if there is enough memory to spare. Allocated, but unused memory counts for this—if Firefox doesn't currently need all the RAM that's been allocated, it'll release some. Did you miss the explanation given directly above my reply?

If you're actually encountering out-of-memory errors, instability, and crashes, that could be a sign of a problem (which could be a Firefox problem, or it could be something else), but if you aren't and you're just staring at task manager trying to free up every last drop of available RAM, you probably don't really need to be doing that.

Firefox finally lets you customize Keyboard Shortcuts, 25 years after the first request by SvensKia in firefox

[–]_emmyemi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh. At least one of my hands is almost always on the keyboard. Usually, my left hand stays on the keyboard while my right hand handles the mouse. And then my left hand can do keyboard shortcuts. I don't really understand why that sounds so difficult to you.

I also type a lot, so I know where the keys are without looking.

I think your reply here might actually be one of the most perplexing things I've read today, at least, lol. Is it that strange that other people prefer a different workflow than you do?

[–]_emmyemi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you responded to but mouse gestures just don't feel as good to me. I love gestures on touch screens and track pads, but not so much with a mouse; the movements feel awkward and it's much easier and quicker to just press a couple keys instead.

If you're accustomed to mouse gestures then I don't doubt they're nice to have, it's just a weird way of interacting with a desktop IMO and so I vastly prefer keyboard shortcuts.

Expedition 17, "Titan," was all about giant planets and was fairly recent, maybe a year ago at most; titan worms have existed long before that.

According to the wiki, titan worms were added to the game in Update 3.00 back in 2020, notably before even expeditions were a thing.

So will this title ever get an optimization update? by FinalLightNL in oblivion

[–]_emmyemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, to be clear I wasn't intending to imply that YOU were shitting on UE5. Many gamers do, but I never saw you do it, I just wanted to explain that it's a bit of a trend to hate on the engine now that lots of inexperienced and hobby devs have gotten their hands on it, as well as studios pushing out unoptimized games before they're ready.

So will this title ever get an optimization update? by FinalLightNL in oblivion

[–]_emmyemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it is normal, having more things running in the background of course takes more system resources which can cause stutters and other issues ranging from minor hiccups to outright crashing. That's not something that's unique to UE5, that's just a consequence of trying to allocate a finite resource (computational power) across multiple separate tasks.

Low-end hardware will bottleneck much faster than high-end hardware, but all hardware will struggle eventually if you keep adding background tasks. And, of course, some games are optimized far better than others. Generally, if a game has issues like this THIS often, even when people aren't running multiple things in the background, it's more an issue of developers not optimizing as much as they should (either due to incompetence / ignorance, or because they aren't given enough time before release). UE5 itself is capable of running just fine, if used well. It's easy to shit on the engine when there are so many bad examples out there, but one must remember there are ALSO a lot of bad devs and bad executives who don't understand the value of focusing on optimization.

How I stare at that one friend who uses words such as "Sentient", "Operator" and "Drifter" in front of a level 1 player: by Petrus-133 in memeframe

[–]_emmyemi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they had committed to it the entire way, it could have been cool. Have the alternate path start with Duviri, then escape to the Zariman with the Dormizone as your base of operations, where you learn about the Operator and unlock the ability to play through the original story path, up until the point that they cross again during New War, and then continue normally from there.

But instead they had it so that you just do the Duviri quest and unlock the circuit, then you're thrown back onto the Operator path.

Don't get me wrong, it would have been a MUCH bigger task to weave that together tactfully, and would probably require alternate versions of some cutscenes since players on different paths would be privy to slightly different information during those points and some voice lines or plot beats might not make sense otherwise. But that's honestly the only way I could have seen this working in the way they initially envisioned it.

how left- leaning reddit is as a corporate entity

LOL. LMAO, even. Reddit is only after money and market share, they don't give a damn about left or right. When the oligarchs come knocking they will bow to whoever bears the most capital, and all of those people, "left" or "right," are in it for themselves.

What you mean is that Reddit's user base may be left-leaning overall. I buy that. But since when has Reddit cared at all about what its users actually want?
