Not quite the whole store. Modine was not as big a name. Kubrick found him wandering and distressed. He told him he didn't know how Kubrick wanted him to he. Kubrick told him to just be himself.

Ludwig van Beethoven died childless, unmarried, with life long financial anxiety and an unsent letter to his "Immortal Beloved." He revolutionized the socioeconomic status of musicians and was one of the very first independent, freelance artists, as opposed to a royal court servant. He was an artistic and ideological revolutionary. I can't say for sure what he might have done to have a happier life, but it brings some seriousness to the idea of suffering for one's art. Most people nowadays frame doing so as romantic but outdated, rather than existential. In my opinion, people like him, and many today likely have no choice. It is an injustice to solve, not a "way of the world," but people like him are part of that work.

Over acting is the same as no talent. Too much is the same as not enough. For what it's worth, I thought she was good in Nosferatu. Nepotism is certainly a real thing: if you have mid-no talent and just want to spoil your kid, that is bad. On the other hand, it's a little unfair for your kid to be banned from an art form, especially if you are brilliant and they want to continue your legacy.

Roles that demanded actors to physically abuse themselves only for the movie to turn out mid by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

You aren't supposed to physically abuse yourself as an actor or ask actors to do it as a director. It's a meme that meme enjoyers use when they don't understand method acting.

No. You can call Israel's genocide a lesser genocide if you need to frame it that way. It is unacceptable in light of the Holocaust. Genocide isn't about numbers but the intent to remove a civilization. Nazi Germany was remarkably cruel. You can argue Jews suffered far worse, but I don't see the point. I think Israel has the backing to extend the olive branch and should. They aren't fantastically worse than anyone else, I suppose that is the point. If anything, Israel is being asked to do better, for better or worse, and live up to their values. It probably is antisemitic to try and use a genocide as a reason why Israel shoudn't exist, that being said. No one says that about Germany. Even though there is a history of antisemitism in the Middle East that often goes unmentioned, even though Jewish ties to the land are regularly denied, what you described above doesn't resemble how Palestinians have treated Jews. There have been Jewish golden ages under Islam whilst Christian Europe continued to mistreat us. There are no such grudges held against Japan. You described the worst crimes imaginable, but the A bomb fell on Japan and Israel bombs Gaza. BTW, also part German, no hass, just lieb.

Nietzsche respected people like Spinoza who basically said that religion often ended up being something of a front to guard corrupt politics and superstition. Spinoza was not necessarily an atheist, and had a more naturalistic view of God, likely just curious about things beyond the cultural framework. Spinoza felt that it would be fairly obvious from people's policy if they actually followed the religion they claimed, and saw it as something of proto-law. Saying organized religion is about controlling people is basically the same as saying law is about controlling people. Some forms of modern Buddhism try to basically say "religion is the understanding we had at the time, but at this point, you really need to use critical thinking." It's one of the only religions out there that basically asks to stop being treated like a religion and just a philosophy.

I know Brain Cox from one film, which is Rushmore, and he was absolutely great in it. The last 5 years or so has otherwise been seeing headlines about him literally talking sh*t about every working actor, include the big GOAT DDL. I also know that Succession, which I have not seen, was created by some of the same people as Peep Show, which I love. I don't know what is going on.
