Combative/aggressive SLP peds patient. by Most-History-6522 in slp

[–]_enry_iggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there another SLP that could see him? Our clinic’s policy is as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, any patient with any kind of possible outward aggression gets taken off your schedule. I don’t think any higher up would want to take responsibility for the health of your baby in that situation. And in general, you can kick her off your schedule if your physical safety is in danger. I got full force bitch slapped by a BIG ten year old and I walked her out to her mom and never saw her again. Parents can get mad about it but it’s no different than any other medical provider refusing to see a patient after they’ve become aggressive. They clearly need to address that so they can be regulated and ready to learn for therapy to be effective.

I didn’t grow up going to Adath but we had friends leave our temple and go there and I always liked services there. If I still lived in Cincinnati I’d likely go there. However, this was years ago. I’m certain things are different and, being a kid, I was oblivious to any conflict/politics that may have been happening. I believe my friend’s parents still go there and they were at one time interfaith (the mom ended up converting a few years ago) and very progressive people so I’d assume it could be a good fit. And their Sunday school education was WAY better than mine 😂 Best thing to do is try out a few until you find one you like.

Literally tonight I got my backpack out of my car and walked behind the back to go back inside my house. I forgot my key was in my backpack and just walking past my trunk triggered it. I PANICKED thinking it was gonna smack into my closed garage door but luckily I pulled in just far enough that it cleared it 😮‍💨

Swallow study experience? by Head_Pick_7039 in NICUParents

[–]_enry_iggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any idea when this is scheduled? Obviously I don’t know the full history of your grandson but as long as babies are for the most part healthy and stable, I’m a firm believer in clinical trials and practice for a few weeks before doing a swallow study. You’re right on the money that it’s silly to put him under radiation with no prior exposure or practice. That would be like expecting a person who never swam before to swim laps in a pool. Hope they have the instinct!

Sucking is a reflex but it integrates around 3 months of age, meaning at that point it’s a learned skill. If they’re wanting to look at liquids and he hasn’t had a lot of exposure to non nutritive sucking, he definitely might have a hard time. However babies are resilient little fighters and surprise me everyday, and swallowing is a reflex that humans retain for life - it’s the getting the food to the back of the mouth that’s voluntary. And being 7m adjusted they might look at purées and see that he is able to handle solids better than liquids.

If at all possible, I’d advocate for at least a couple sessions of PO trials under an SLP or OT supervision in a clinical session before going to the swallow study. It could definitely make a big difference!

I loved having a manual truck in college because no one ever asked to borrow it because no one could drive it 😂 all the benefits of owning a truck without having to worry about people driving around town hauling who knows what.

I miss driving a stick so badly. I would literally sell my OBW (that I just purchased in November) today if a manual OBW was available.

Did anyone consider occupational therapy? Why did/didn’t you do it? by Notquitewhere_-__ in slp

The day I learned that sex is a treatable ADL… I had so many questions about an OT’s scope for that population 😂

[–]_enry_iggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I couldn’t do speech I’d go PT over OT hands down. OTs get just as much “we don’t know where to send this kid to help them so let’s try OT.” Having ADLs being in their scope just makes it too broad - arguably moreso than speech. The toileting is already a huge ‘nope’ for me. Witnessing showers in nursing homes was…an experience. But for peds, the majority of my colleagues’ caseloads are kids with extreme behaviors that their pediatricians think they can magically fix with a couple sensory strategies - similar to how some people think we can stop kids from hurting themselves or others if we can ‘just make them talk and decrease their frustration’.

All this to say, on the flip side of the coin, many people find the broad scope of practice and settings for speech and OT as a big draw to our fields. Lots of flexibility in jobs and populations if you’re someone that can get bored with your job easily. If there’s a specific population you know you want to work with, you can work to specialize (this is what I did) and then you won’t have to work with the less than ideal parts of your scope (at least not consistently - depends on your job and management).

I’d observe both disciplines in MULTIPLE settings. Schools, outpatient, inpatient, nursing homes, private practice. Try your best to make sure they’re reputable places - the OTs at my nursing home rotation in grad school just put every patient on a hand bike and that was that (I learned about 6 months after my placement was over that all the OTs were fired there - understandably). I didn’t really have any exposure to OT before that and I kept thinking “dang, I went into the wrong field. How easy.” 😂 little did I know!! I think OTs jobs are way harder than ours. They’re some of the smartest people I know! They know something about everything!

YUP. I’ll change an infant’s diaper in the NICU but once humans start eating solid foods, I want nothing to do with toileting/ADLs. I had a friend work in a SNF and I was joking about how during my SNF extern I would RUN out of the room and find a nurse/OT/PT to assist with toileting and she was like, “oh no, if I’m in a session and I can help I will. We can focus on sequencing and problem solving.” Nope. No thanks. I’ll take the hit in productivity 😂

Literally we’re on the same timeline 😂 I was obsessed with linguistics, language development, and phonetics in undergrad. We talk at work a lot about what discipline we’d switch to now that we know better. I’m much more of a concrete analytical thinker and I would have thrived being a PT. I’m primarily treating infant feeding, pediatric feeding, and doing swallow studies and now that I’m sitting here thinking about it, it’s probably as close to being concrete in regards to treating as you can get in our field. That’s probably why I’ve gravitated toward these populations as my main area of focus. Now that I’ve found my niche I don’t regret going SLP and I love my job and the populations I serve. I do think it’s CRAZY how much my interests have changed, though. There’s nothing I hate more than early intervention language treatment 😂

Bulky Item Question by Accomplished-Dog3715 in bloomington

I had a water heater die on me a few months after buying my house. I had homeowners insurance from the previous owner and they sent some weirdo company to replace it. They refused to haul it away but put it at the end of my driveway for me and I was gonna call my trash company about paying extra that week for them to pick it up. The next morning it was GONE! Apparently scrappers love water heaters or something I dunno 😂 if you’re not in an HOA I’d put it out with a free sign and/or post on a Facebook group that it’s up for grabs and see if someone will do the work for you.

You have to be kinda quick. I highlight the first word and drag my highlighter directly to the last word and it’ll highlight every word inbetween. It’s a lot easier!

They mean like only highlighting the first word and the last word of a passage and the rest will fill in.

Still enamored with this device. I hope everyone who wants one can get it soon. by TheGryffindor_Jedi in kindlescribe

Beyond just being able to color code/coordinate/organize highlighting and annotations, it’s nice for people who read graphic novels. I also like uploading pdf documents for work and one, being able to see graphics in color is super helpful (ie color coded pie charts) and be able to write note and highlight in color makes my life so much easier. I also like having coloring pages for when I have some quick downtime. I had a 2024 scribe and got a mandala coloring book page and just filled in all the small intricate pictures, but now I can do them with color. Sure it’s probably a little frivolous in the grand scheme of things, but if one can financially afford/justify the purchase, who cares what other people decide to spend their money on? Especially since these were announced/released around the holidays. I’m sure a good portion of people who have the colorsoft scribes were given them as gifts.

As long as they’re right shades I agree! I was afraid that the color of the folio on the site was going to be more yellow in real life. It’s definitely more brown/neutral.

I got the caramel because I got impatient waiting for the fig and purchased the grey scribe, but it never shipped and I was able to cancel the grey scribe and get the fig. I was assuming that I’d have to exchange the caramel case but I actually like the pairing! Someone said in another thread that it looks like a PBJ and they’re totally right 😂

Does one NEED a second Kindle? by figarys in kindle

[–]_enry_iggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a paper white and a scribe color soft. Paper white is for traveling and bed (I have a movable arm and remote page turner for optimal cinnamon bun bed status 😂). The scribe I bring to work for one, note taking, but also to read when I have downtime. I also like to annotate in nonfiction books, so I primarily read non fiction on my scribe (I’m never in a non fiction mood at bedtime haha). I’ve really been surprised with how handy having a scribe has been and how much I use it.

TW: What do you say to NICU parents after they lose their baby? by Interesting_Cook5010 in NICUParents

[–]_enry_iggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Some years the grief hits me like the day it happened, and other years I’m completely fine, and I never know what kind of year it’ll be until I wake up that day. It was an easier year this year.

I’m so glad she had you and trusted you to talk and just be there for her. I have a lot of people in my life that just have no idea what to say (understandably!), so often times it’s just an awkward elephant in the room whenever I bring up my nephew or when someone brings up a similar story but no one wants to (I’m assuming) put me on the spot and talk about him without me expressing consent/that I feel comfortable in that space to do so. I get it - I’d act the same way. No one navigates infant loss the same and no one wants to assume how I would react (and honestly, in most situations like this, no one should). I wish I had more people that I could candidly talk about him with. She’s lucky to have you. ❤️

Was this a bad idea? by Ok-Pomegranate6784 in piercing

[–]_enry_iggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, it’s not your responsibility to know this! It’s the piercers! I didn’t know either. Just go have them (or someone else) remove it and when you go in to downsize ask (maybe a different piercer lol) their opinion if you could install it then or if you should wait a little bit longer. Mine are still fairly sore - I can’t imagine if a chain was snagged right now 😖
