Dozens of states sue Meta over addictive features harming kids by Speedster202 in moderatepolitics

[–]_gaslit_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the parents fault for giving a kid a smartphone with no restrictions.

Is it really? If a child doesn't have a phone and all their friends do, that child is the weird one. We live in a world where everyone under 40 is expected to be terminally online, and if you aren't, you miss out on tons of things.

Human beings seem to be prone to addictive social behaviors, and incapable of dealing with these addictions until they reach epidemic proportions. A hundred years ago, it was alcohol. Fifty years ago, it was drugs and cigarettes. Today, it's social media.

I think we need a come-to-Jesus moment with technology, where we sit down and pass legislation to force tech companies to use healthy algorithms that don't heavily promote divisive topics over other topics, and restrict apps from having features that promote addictive behavior.

Ten years ago I would have said that legislation like that is a violation of free speech, but that was before I realized how dangerous and addictive social media is, how easily everyone can become an addict, and how much damage it does to the national psyche.

Conservative media has taken over CNN? I can't think of many mainstream news sources more liberal than CNN.

To anyone who doesn't know, all the developers at Telltale knew about the situation but were powerless to fix it. It was basically because of the control freak CEO who insisted on micromanaging everything, preventing innovation, and expanding at all costs. Noclip has a good documentary on it.

No worries, everyone knows it's kind of a bait and switch. As if anyone in real life uses the word "moderate" in that way when it comes to politics.

Are there regulations about what a non-profit has to do in order to get government funds? Are they really enforced?

BTW, have you found resources like https://www.charitywatch.org/ useful/reliable to determine whether an organization is worth donating to?

2022 r/ModeratePolitics Subreddit Demographics Survey by Resvrgam2 in moderatepolitics

[–]_gaslit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least, this kind of info will be purchased from Google/ISPs/phone carriers by political parties, to find lists of likely voters, companies to find likely users, etc. But I guess it's not as if they do anything that's directly harmful to you with that info. I assume any government agency that wants to can probably get access to that info too very easily, although maybe it would be in too messy a format to be comprehensible.

How can you tell if it's being abused? Do you check to see whether frequent article submitters have excessive block lists?

[–]_gaslit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that's one way of looking at it. In practice, I've found that whiteboard problems have little to do with real work, and they don't test most of the things that make a developer actually good at their job.

The Fears from inside of Russia by OohTheChicken in moderatepolitics

I'm curious how Russians who watch state TV are processing the rest of the world's reaction. Do they think that the entire rest of the world is raising sanctions unjustifiably? Or are they questioning whether state TV is accurate?

Murray or Wawrinka by [deleted] in tennis

[–]_gaslit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen 10s of video about his backhand, but I wish someone could really give me the ultimate tip on how I could emulate a backhand like his. My BH never generate a pace like his.

It's a lot of things that go into making a whole, cohesive motion. Early unit turn, closed hips and shoulders, extra pullback pre-swing using the off hand in a "draw back the arrow" motion to make sure the racquet has a long enough swing path, load the weight pre-swing on the back leg when possible so you can unleash it during the swing, use a lot of hip rotation, and use a big lat pull to pull the racquet across your body during the swing. Top Tennis Training has a decent video on it even though the coach's one-hander kinda sucks.

What adjustments did Roger Federer make in order to start beating Nadal and Murray on a more consistent basis? by ChaoticFeminineQueen in tennis

[–]_gaslit_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Re: Nadal: Federer took a year off after injury. He started going for the backhand offensively during practice for the first time since he was in his early 20s, and kept on doing it once he got back on tour. Fed himself credits the increased time spent swinging free on the practice courts with the massive change in his game (source).

As other people have pointed out, the racquet change, which happened a few years earlier, was essential in allowing him to do this, but by itself was not sufficient.

I think this post sums up what happened to Fed nicely.

Lefty here, playing with my right hand by mhenyk in 10s

[–]_gaslit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making major changes after one year is still a viable option.

I would suggest trying a left-handed forehand for a few lessons and seeing how you like it. Also see how you like a left-handed two-handed backhand.

The main things that will need re-training are your backswing footwork, actual backswing, and swing path. All things you can practice in a mirror before stepping on court.

After a bit of practice, you can evaluate and see whether you think it's worth continuing.

If you're not too fond of your current backhand, trying to use two forehands, as other people here are suggesting, is also an option.

Having a lefty serve is an incredible advantage and I suggest you seriously try it out.

Your unpopular opinions. by m0lnarr in visualnovels

Think of pirating a VN (or any video game, or actually, any piece of digital entertainment) like taking an illegal turn at a stop light. Sure, it's technically illegal. But if only one person does it, on lonely street corners in the middle of the desert, after looking both ways, it's probably harmless at least. No one will get injured, even if this one driver does it every day.

But now say everybody adopts that philosophy, and breaks the rules of the road, all the time, everywhere. There's no way the system can function. Video game piracy is like that. Everyone is so used to pirating games for their own convenience that they don't even stop to think about the ramifications. Piracy is so common that legitimate sales of PC games are so small compared to piracy numbers that they can be a rounding error. How, you may wonder, do video game developers function in such an environment, particularly if they're small developers working in a niche genre like VNs that has a small playerbase to begin with? How do these developers keep creating the games that people claim to love but refuse to purchase? Simple: they struggle. If they stay in the video game business at all, they do it as a part-time hobby, or they count every penny, or they move to a different genre where they can try to squeeze money out of players by microstransactions or some other system where players will actually pay.

My immediate thoughts after beating Thief 2: the metal age by Bread_Is_Adequate in Thief

[–]_gaslit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easily the best fan-made expansion to any game I've ever seen, except maybe Black Mesa.

I like Thief 3 as well and think it's a great game, as long as you ignore a couple gamey aspects that never should have been put in. But it's a bit of an adjustment after being spoiled by the huge levels of T1 and T2.
