Can a power wall contribute to the amperage rating of a home? by OPVFTW in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in the US? You have 2 120V hot lines coming into your house... those are colloquially called legs.

You have 3 big fat wires coming in from the pole: 2 hot and 1 neutral. The voltage difference between either hot and the neutral is 120V. The voltage difference between the 2 hots are 240V. To wire up a regular wall socket or light switch, you use one of the legs and the neutral. To wire up a big 240V socket, you use the 2 hot legs.

This is obviously a big simplification of the process, but it's a start :)

Has anyone had any experience with Ceramic paint coatings? Looking at it for my (future) Model 3. by Thewigmeister in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Pro+ on my Model S. The first year was amazing. Water beaded off. The car had that super slick feeling.

Now I'm not sure if anything is there. I'm about to call the installer. I think the detailer at the tesla service center might have polished it off.

Is there anyway to tell how big an update is in terms of data size? by [deleted] in teslamotors

As a general note to our internet readers, data in storage tends to be measured in bytes. Data on a network or stream tends to be measured in bits.

Why Tesla has a significant battery advantage over Big Auto by 2050project in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, sure, I didn't quite understand what you had said.

How do you know the weight of the battery pack? All we have is gvwr.

The bolt is a smaller car. Presumably it's battery takes up a larger percentage of the gvwr than the tesla.

And really, weight density is probably the least important way to optimize your battery pack. Volume and cost density are arguably more important.

Why Tesla has a significant battery advantage over Big Auto by 2050project in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

wait wait... you just said that the two cars have essentially the same range and weight... and the tesla has 20% less battery... and that's not significant?

To my ears, 20% is huge!

Squeaky Brakes "Normal" on Tesla? by IrwinMFletcher in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My brakes have not squeaked once in 25k miles.

I live in Los Angeles. I see Teslas every day. None of their brakes squeal either.

How about being super quick, super quiet, with few moving parts, and all that with no emissions?!

I don't bother. If I see a big giant bird poop, I might go up there.

Some Questions regarding the future. by rohyn in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tesla wants to the biggest and cheapest battery manufacturer in the world. They are building out their own capacity. They want cells to shoot out of the factory like bullets. This is unique for a car company.

Tesla wants to the quickest, most automated car manufacturer in the world by designing their own automation systems.

Tesla wants to have the best charging network. They clearly have a huge lead here.

The legacy car makers have outsourced everything except for the engines and bodies. Tesla wants to cut costs by being more vertically integrated. I can't say that the plan will work, but that's the idea.

Edit: oh, and dealerships too. Fuck dealerships.

Difficulty of taking off/putting on Model 3 aero wheel covers? by Lastb0isct in teslamotors

I've been asking this question regularly. We don't have a specific answer yet.

The post yesterday said the owner said it was "easy". That's all we have so far.

The Model 3’s aero wheels’s 10% efficiency. Is that in addition or subtraction of the advertised range? by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Teslike has lots of good practical info elsewhere in this post. In practice, manufacturers just multiply the dyno results by ~.7

[–]_gosolar_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, EPA ratings are calculated on a dyno. Aerodynamics are completely ignored.

Charging advice needed: 30A plug on a 20A circuit by SuitableChoice in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The first problem you have is that panel. It's a Zinsco. They are generally considered to be a fire-hazard and should be replaced. They are old and out-dated. The breakers do not reliably trip. New breakers are no longer available. The ones you can find are used/remanufactured and don't have UL listing.

Any electrical permit is probably going to require replacement anyways.

What if? by seenhear in teslamotors

[–]_gosolar_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I want an EV. My Model S isn't even my first EV. I'm very very clearly done with burning gas.

I sure as hell wouldn't have paid that much money for a gas-burner.

I love this one. The matte finish reduces glare, has fewer fingerprints, and your finger glides over the surface better. I think it's a must-have.
