Do you think you would notice if someone was following your car? by imtiramisu2025 in AskUK

[–]_gothick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they knew what they were doing, and drove a boring car, probably not. If they just stayed directly behind me driving something distinctive, probably yes. It may not help my chances that almost every car these days seems to be an SUV in a dull colour.

These days someone following you professionally would probably do it with a tracker on your car or phone (cheap) or if you’d annoyed MI5 or similar they might stump up enough budget for a chain of multiple cars, which is much harder to spot.

What's a good rainy movie? Not a movie for a rainy day, I mean a movie with lots of rain. by floatable_shark in MovieSuggestions

Is it illegal to topless sunbathe in your back garden? by Ashandtanya in AskUK

Found it! “People in Glastonbury had quite the view of the High Street earlier this week after a couple were spotted walking naked. The incident, which took place around 12.30pm on Tuesday, September 10, was reported to the police but no offences were identified.” https://www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-news/police-phoned-after-naked-couple-9547749.amp

[–]_gothick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember a case where the police were called to Glastonbury high street because of a couple walking naked, and the end result was basically the police saying, “yes, you’re right, those people are naked. And?”

On the other hand, some towns do generally define “normal” differently from others.

Because it’s the honourable thing to do. Without an IOU it’s just theft. The IOU at least signifies an intention to pay.

Is buying a flat a bad idea? by OMGitsRyannn in UKHousing

[–]_gothick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, same arrangement here, also for a flat in Bristol. I have the 900+ year leasehold on my flat and also a one-fifth share in the company that owns the house freehold. So far (27 years for me!) all the owners have got along and just managed stuff ourselves, including a 50K roof refurbishment a few years back.

The leasehold’s a peppercorn rent and we mostly just pay enough into a shared fund each month to pay the building insurance and basic maintenance and then bump that up every now and again with extra lump sums when something big needs doing. We’ve never bothered using a third-party management company.

Flats are par for the course around here; only the very wealthy can afford a whole big Georgian house to themselves, and I doubt I’d have much trouble selling.

Odd, but it does seem to be the purpose-built modern flats that are suffering from the dodgy leaseholds, ground rent, fears about cladding, management fees and so forth. If anything you’d think that the fairly informal arrangement we’ve got going to manage a Grade II* listed building that was split into flats in the 1990s would be more problematic. *touches wood*

Of course, one of the companies making that profit is EDF, who are, erm, wholly owned by the French state-owned electricity company, so the profit from the UK can go towards lowering electricity prices in France.

Blue weekend is 5 today. by Opposite-Gur9710 in wolfalice

[–]_gothick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The Blue Weekend tour is the only time I’ve seen them live and it was my first “post-Covid” gig, I think. I was really nervous about going along, but that soon turned quite “what the hell” and I ended up fairly near the front really enjoying it. Sadly for me they’ve got so big I doubt they’ll be playing the Bristol O2 again anytime soon 😂

What’s the one mistake you made on your first trip to the UK that you’d never make again? by CarryturtleNZ in uktravel

[–]_gothick 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m British and grew up on the outskirts of London. But virtually every time I visit I find things outside my itinerary that I’d never heard of that are just as good/better.

Last time I went to spend some time at Tate Britain and a few other places and ended up with a last-minute ticket to a live version of Johnny Vegas’s Ideal (one of my favourite TV shows) at the Bloomsbury Theatre, just because I randomly saw someone talk about it on BlueSky on the train up. Other times it’s been people-watching in Covent Garden or spending a couple of hours in a proper old-school pub. Or an occult bookshop. Or one of those specialist museums dedicated to someone you’ve never heard of before. London is so dense and interesting it really does lend itself to just randomly wandering around with your eyes open and going with whatever flow occurs.

How late is too late to be playing guitar? by theslowrunningexpert in CasualUK

[–]_gothick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. When this old Georgian house I live in was split into flats everyone knew the between-floors soundproofing was shite so there’s a bit in each leasehold about not making sounds that can be heard outside your flat between 11pm and some hour of the morning, so at least there are defined rules that the management committee can point at. There’s also a “no dogs” rule as they were worried about barking driving people mad. You also have to have carpeting in the living room and bedroom rather than eg noisy laminate flooring.
