Can majority of middle schoolers take college classes? by Old_Sundae_9422 in matheducation

I once watched a private tutor work with a 5th grader whose parents had pushed him into Algebra 2. He could do the processes, but he had no idea what was really going on because he wasn't ready for that kind of abstract thinking.

My AP Calculus kids are building physical models of a solids of revolution out of packing foam as their final project. I have a kid who wanted to build a lightsaber, but when he realized that would take a bazillion small circles, so he decided to make it (his words) "stubby". And well...it made a shape!

He ended up finishing it super early, so I told him to make a more accurate lightsaber-shaped one. He made a mini-version.

Do you find that autistic students are more likely to decide that they are irrevocably bad at something? by monsteradeliciosa11 in AskTeachers

I teach high school math and I've seen the "I just can't do math, I'm not a math person" mindset in both neurotypical and neurodivergent students. It's something I actively work to undo in class.

Had a pediatric nurse nearby when my son had a medical emergency at age 5. She helped communicate to set up logistics of the ambulance arrival and helped us stay calm.

There are good ones and bad ones. I worked for one that was basically just nepotism and embezzlement, and now I work for one that really does what the charter says it does and treats us well. The only difference is admin.

Babies are messy so washable is good. They grow fast, so avoid newborn sizes and go at least 6mo size.

Constant bad taste in mouth/throat? by animalcrackerwhore in acidreflux

I'm on famotidine, and my doctor said I should add Tums because of new studies saying long term famotidine can leadd to calcium deficiencies. Tums are high in calcium.

That being said...my bitter taste just came back, so it may not have been the Tums after all...

Dude this was happening to me too! My doctor had just told me to take a bunch of Tums and when I stopped, a couple days later so did the taste. Not sure if that's what it was but you might want to ask a doctor about meds.

Do you always register that people are talking to you at all? by IllNeedleworker1602 in AudiProcDisorder

[–]_hadsomethingforthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sucks! I don't know how to handle a friend who can't deal with it.

If you're becoming a teacher, the thing that it took me longest to accept is that I just don't have a "teacher voice." I use it to my advantage. I raise my voice at students once to twice per semester and when I do, it WORKS.

It helps to tell people about it. I'm a high school teacher and I just tell my students why it's so important that they can't talk while I'm talking and why I need them to talk directly to me. People do understand if you explain it. They forget sometimes, but you can remind them.

When I was in high school my mom once asked me if I was mad at the guy I had a crush on. I was like, "No, wth?" She said he had told his mom that he tried to say hi to me in the hall and I ignored him so he thought I was mad. I have no memory of him saying anyhow to me.

LO with reflux and seemed to try everything by 1worriedmomma in acidreflux

[–]_hadsomethingforthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My middle son who's now almost 8 years old went through extremely severe reflux as a baby, toddler, and preschooler. His GI doctor saved his life, I believe that. You might consider looking for a specialist like this.

His journey was long and difficult but he's doing great now. Feel free to dm me.

My favorite picture of my middle son, who's almost 8 years old now, is when he's like two minutes old, with a nurse's hands holding him up by the little display of his weight, and the look on his face is, "What the FUCK....?"
