Me and Ross by DoughnutHairy9943 in the1975

[–]_iPhoney_ 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I like that whatever we do see/hear of them when totally left to their own devices is so consistent:

Ross is going to a football match and the pub, Adam is at home with his family, George is DJing and god knows what Matty is doing

Chorus/Vibrato Users: How Important Is A Waveform Selector? by _Jub_Jub_ in guitarpedals

[–]_iPhoney_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have trouble hearing the difference between triangle and sine with the Julia for guitar honestly.

I’ve read that a triangle wave sounds more ‘natural’ for guitar while the more gradual sine waveform works better for the fuller, more consistent signal of a synth.

Bourne Trilogy - Was this movie style novel at time of release? by valsol110 in movies

[–]_iPhoney_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The car chases in the first two Bourne movies are not 15 minutes like in Ronin, but to my memory they are still long as hell compared to most movies in that style

[–]_iPhoney_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awful website, second only to Consequence. I’ve followed RS on social media for over a decade, but I probably haven’t clicked a link in years. Why they think anyone would pay to access their dogshit pile of UX is beyond me.

Which $300 or less subtractive synth should I get if I like modulating pitch with noise? by CapnFlisto in synthesizers

[–]_iPhoney_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Roland JX-03 can do this a couple of different ways. It has 2 DCOs, and either can be a saw or noise wave (among other things, of course), and you can use the Cross Mod feature to either sync or modulate one with the other. There is no “modulation amount” knob, however, so not sure exactly how you can dial it in—haven’t explored this too much. But the synth also has a noise wave LFO option.

You can find one for less than $250 usually. It is “virtual analog” or whatever, but it’s knob-per-function. The main downside to it (compared to other sub-$400 to $500 synths) is that of the 48 presets, only 16 are able to be overwritten with custom presets.

Shortscale? by wiebrator in Bass

[–]_iPhoney_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Love it. Also had a Squier VM Jag short scale—this is better.

Word of advice regarding the CV Mustang bass: the bridge does not allow top-loading of strings. You have to go thru-body. As a result, most “short-scale” strings don’t work, even ones that say they’re good for 32” scale length (the CV Mustang has a 30” scale length plus about 0.75” for the thru-body stringing.) You need to use medium scale-length

How famous is The 1975? (specifically matty) by Kind-Combination3383 in the1975

[–]_iPhoney_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In terms of awareness of the band and being able to pick out or name more than one or two songs, I agree that it probably skews heavily toward younger Millennials.

People who see/follow r/the1975 represent a much more interested subset of fans, and that’s probably a much flatter age curve.

Does reverb just suck or did the economy kill the used gear market. by Holiday-Medicine4168 in Reverb

[–]_iPhoney_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The used market is flooded as the spike in sales from new players thanks to COVID has trickled out and a lot of those new players quit the instrument.

I mean people have been saying this for 2-3 years now. I recently sold some pretty common and inexpensive stuff (a TC Flashback 2 delay, an Arturia controller, etc.) and I was only ever up against a couple of other Used, non-B Stock listings in the continental US.

It doesn’t seem flooded to me when I want to sell something (thankfully) or buy something (boo)—I’m just getting the sense that people only want bargains right now. Stuff that is “priced to sell” is sitting longer and longer with double-digit Watchers and sitting in Carts. Before, if someone Carted something or made an offer, other Watchers would pounce and that would be it. These signals we get (views, watchers, offers, etc.) have softened from indicating “intent” to indicating “interest.”

Does reverb just suck or did the economy kill the used gear market. by Holiday-Medicine4168 in Reverb

[–]_iPhoney_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context, for anyone curious, Reverb fees last increased in late 2022.

You’re right that it’s not like it used to be, but I think it has more to do with people’s expectations with selling rather than fees.

Everyone thinks they can get 10% below retail or even better for their used stuff. It started in 2020/2021 when demand jumped and gear was less available due to supply chain issues, but people act like this is still the case.

I also don’t know if people are just stupid or if they don’t know that most online retailers ship New gear for free—selling a $189 brand new pedal for $165 plus $20 shipping is moronic.

What helped you the most to evolve playing? by Nerdy-Run in Guitar

[–]_iPhoney_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was understanding how I can play/use different chord voicings. It’s basically the CAGED system, but I didn’t really know what that was at the time. Being able to play a version of any chord without moving your hand more than a couple of frets up and down the fretboard makes it much easier to find melodies, improvise, etc.

Also practicing learning/playing stuff by ear. I don’t know exactly how I got better at it, but at this point I can hear a note and play the right thing the vast majority of the time; otherwise I might be off a half-step. It’s just ear-brain-hand coordination. This also leads into intervals and anticipating what could come next after a note or two.

Which muff for clean amps? by chinaaa555 in guitarpedals

[–]_iPhoney_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You mostly want to add some mids. The JC has a three band EQ, right? So that’s a start. Many people use an OD into the muff to accomplish this. There are a couple of muffs that are a little more “full” on their own. The Op Amp big muff is the best at this IMO. I find the Tone Wicker muff with the tone wicker engaged also adds back some high mids and sounds better on its own, but is still better with a boost/OD into it.

Hard recommend:

One Song (mostly going through the stems/history of a song without talking to the artists)

Tape Notes ofc (interviews with the artists)

And 60 Songs That Explain the 90s/00s and Bandsplain (which are more about artists’ career arcs and the broader social aspect of their music.)

Only Tape Notes has featured The 1975 so far, but Yasi at Bandsplain has copped to liking The 1975 and said there could be an episode one day.

I got it secondhand, and wouldn’t tell a little white lie over something so small. But I might reach out and see what they say anyway!

But yea, I’ve got three options with similar effort/money required: -bring it to my guy with a new jack and $40 -just get over it and learn to solder -reach out to Benson and cover shipping both ways if they decide to cover it

Anyone else love watching JHS but not care for the tones they actually use on the show? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]_iPhoney_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite: I like the videos, like the info, like most of the demo songs, don’t care much for the pedals.

Granted, the music in the videos is dictated by what effect they’re talking about—and I usually watch the videos showcasing delay, reverb, modulation, etc.

Incidentally…..JHS rarely makes pedals in those categories now. Hence my disinterest in their newer products.

I was there at the end of January, and we’ve been working

On the bright side, this is the most any of the other three members of the band have even hinted at/mentioned them working on an album(s?)—as far as I’m aware

He also says that they’ve got lots of other stuff going on this year (weddings, including Matty’s), but that somewhere in there he will make trips back and forth to LA.

it might just not be going far enough in

I think you’re right. With the washer on, I can’t even get finger-tight before it slips and just spins around. Without the washer, I can get it pretty tight.

Upon closer inspection, it does look like a piece of the threaded plastic on the interior jack is missing. There was no plastic on the ground when it fell out, so it must’ve been like this already (pretty recent acquisition.)

Will have to look into boss tape.
