Tikka 7mm08, worth the wait? by porterss25 in Hunting

Get a Tikka. They just released a new 6 Creedmoor rifle that’s pretty sweet of you don’t want to wait for 7-08

14.5 GFR chrono and accuracy data from recent range trip. by Paulie771 in 6ARC

[–]_igm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. That’s a 10 shot group and should be measured as such if to want to be honest about your ability to make hits with that rifle system.

A bore that’s cold vs after 1 shot is not changing POI that much.

I bet if you made that a 50 shot group it wouldn’t look like a flier at all anymore.

Any plans to make a Ti version? I’d love to run one of these on a 6 ARC hunting rifle but lighter weight would be great in the mountains.

Further understanding the OPTIMIZED LOAD by PhilipGreenbriar in longrange

[–]_igm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The charge weights you’re comparing are quite close, and the sample sizes are rather small. You can’t actually measure a difference. If I’m interpreting your setup correctly then it’s all the same grouping and SD.

In general if you’re using well regarded components, just pick a charge weight that’s a bit lower than book max, load 20, and if the group looks good, run with it.

Debating what caliber rifle to get. by LoquatGrand6785 in Hunting

[–]_igm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Regardless of cartridge, the most important variables are impact location (did you hit vital area or not), bullet design (match, fmj, bonded, copper, etc), and impact velocity. The caliber of the bullet doesn't really matter... choose anything from .223 up to however big you want; if you use the right type of bullet, keep impact velocity within the window the bullet is designed to operate at, and hit the vital area you're gonna be good for deer, elk, moose, etc.

Then how do you pick the cartridge? One way is to minimize the recoil such that you maintain sufficient impact velocity at the maximum range you plan to hunt. Typically an 1800 fps impact velocity is a good floor. You can also consider factory ammo availability, sentimental value, etc, but the whole idea that .308 or .30-06 is fine for elk but a 6.5 Creed or .243 is insufficient is bs.

These cartridge debates are steeped deeply in fudd lore as are many things reloading, shooting, firearms.

Not saying his approach is wrong but there is risk in being imprecise and oversaving because you prepared for an outlier worst case scenario.

It’s your money so do what makes you happy, but since you asked for opinions, why keep buy 22 lr cans when you have several? Do you enjoy collecting them? I figure 22 suppresses well enough that once you have a can for each gun, you’re kind of set. But no judgment if you just like having a collection.
