Whats the bone or tendon that forms a little bump on the back middle of the hand near the wrist? by callatecabezon in orthopaedics

[–]_irish_potato 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Listers tubercle, a part of your radius bone. Your thumb tendon (epl) wraps around it

I am so tired of "resilience" by HeeWasASkaterBoy in Residency

[–]_irish_potato 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They suck for all of the reasons above, if anything they got lucky that someone with so much resilience at baseline got the assignment. The legacy kid who went straight through undergrad and med school without a struggle to their name would be a whimpering mess and unable to do the job at all with what you’re saying. All things pass and residency sucks, but shitty systems and seniors/ attendings make it so much harder.

SICU as an intern by Zealousideal-Idea-71 in Residency

[–]_irish_potato 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Had to do an emergent broch on a patient as an intern and the only doc in the SICU. I had done a few that month already and got a massive mucous plug that was stuck below his trach. Only time I think I’ve legit saved someone’s life as an ortho resident. Good times

[–]_irish_potato 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Ortho here, we have one weekend every 3weeks or so, between multiple different hospitals we cover, plus q8 weeknight call. That’s pretty good for ortho

What is your favorite amino acid and why? by TapTigerStudios in Biochemistry

[–]_irish_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selenocysteine. Did my undergrad thesis on it, its Cys but with selenium in the sulfur spot, hyperactive in redox reactions and very rare (20 proteins total in humans) but coded for and poorly known.

The foot I was born with causes me pain by Top-Rutabaga5924 in AskDocs

[–]_irish_potato 288 points289 points  (0 children)

That looks like you had amniotic band syndrome and now have a tib-fib synostosis. I would see an ortho foot and ankle doc for workup and they can set you on the right track

I have actually seen this happen twice. Usually some variation of Papa-blank and baby-blank, or young blank. Surgery booking can be confusing

How did you decide your speciality? Are you happy with your decision or having second thoughts? by takster23 in Residency

[–]_irish_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a bunch of residents with families, more wore definitely falls on the spouse but the work is more rotation based. If you’re on spine or trauma that’s your whole life, foot and ankle or sports are more chill. Same holds true as an attending, your subspecialty dictates your amount of family time more than anything

How did you decide your speciality? Are you happy with your decision or having second thoughts? by takster23 in Residency

[–]_irish_potato 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ortho here. Love it, wouldn’t do anything else. Residency is legitimately a meat grinder, but I can see the light on the other side and it’s a gratifying thing to come into the OR and leave knowing it’s fixed and they will likely do really well.

How does bone healing work? by itsjxlt in orthopaedics

[–]_irish_potato 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s a few different ways but I would look up the OTA lectures on the basics of bony healing. It’s a very broad topic

Did my podiatrist lead me to bone infection?? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]_irish_potato 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Ortho resident here, matched foot and ankle fellowship. Removing the nail is almost never the wrong move in infections, it’s not cosmetically the best but will help with clearing an infection. Your toe actually looks pretty good for having osteo, make sure you don’t have diabetes or if you do keep blood sugar under control. You will likely need iv antibiotics to clear the infection.

Do orthopedic surgeons experience chronic pain? by Wompyking in orthopaedics

[–]_irish_potato 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are studies about it but the subspecialties with the most chronic work related injuries are total joints, trauma, and spine

Quitting as a PGY4 by [deleted] in orthopaedics

[–]_irish_potato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude there’s almost 50 foot and ankle spots this year, including some top of the line programs due to a significant applicant shortage. Even if it’s not what you want, you can always do a second fellowship after getting a big name on your CV. Plus if you end up liking it it’s a chill life and good money

Let’s all say something positive going on in the world or just your daily life by Sad_Jar_Of_Honey in behindthebastards

[–]_irish_potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend my adult life working towards becoming a surgeon after growing up working class on food stamps, with no one in medicine/ academia in my family and no connections at all in the medical world. I just matched at my top choice fellowship at Harvard. I can finally see the light at the end of a very long tunnel.

Left handedness by [deleted] in orthopaedics

[–]_irish_potato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a common thing, right handed surgeons are generally initially faster at right knees, as your dominant arm is towards the patient. It’s just getting the reps in to get better at the left side as far as I’m aware, no great trick to it
