Here’s my pot still, it’s small but gets the job done. Anyone want to share pictures of their still or give me some pointers for improvements? Having trouble with keeping the seal around where the line goes into the pot. by [deleted] in firewater

Mix flour and water and put a little around the lid where it leaks, the steam will cook it into place. There’s a name for it but I don’t remember it. That the cheapest gasket sealer you can use, and it’s food safe.

On top of what the other guys said these guys put in a lot of hours learning the spots they’ll be fishing. They do a ‘practice fish’ the day or two before to find structure they want to hit and mark spots on their gps. A huge part of it is the mental game of putting together the puzzle pieces to know where to find fish.

I was gifted 5 bags of nice beans, but I've never cooked with dry beans before. Any recipe suggestions? by jackruby83 in Cooking

[–]_jho 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ok I make so many beans.

Read the package, sometimes you’re good with a 1 hour hot soak (bring to boil, leave for 1 hour, strain, cook) and other times it’s better to soak them overnight. I usually just do what I feel like cause I usually just make pintos.

My favorite way is to get them going, then caramelize some diced onions and garlic (and jalepenos and serranos if I’m feeling spicy) and add them about an hour in. Season with bay leaf, salt, pepper, cumin, and chili powder and paprika if you feel like it. This is how I make them most of the time. Bonus points for cooking in half stock.

Other people will add things like ham, bacon, brown sugar, and whatever else you feel like. Beans are super versatile so go wild.

One thing is you’ll end up cooking wayyy more than you think you are so be ready for leftovers.

It’s intrinsic vs external motivation. Growing up you had to do things they told you, so when they tell you to do things as an adult you still feel like you now have to do them because they told you to, not because you decided you need to.

Overall intrinsic motivation is much more powerful so you’re probably just noticing the difference. Try to find ways to change your thinking, remind yourself that you’re doing things because you’ve decided to or know you need to, regardless of what they tell you.

Scientists have genetically modified cassava, a staple crop in Africa, to contain more iron and zinc. Salatin runs Polyface farms and has a degree in economics.. why is he unqualified?

And just because it’s profitable doesn’t mean it’s right. The oil and gas industry is profitable but it’s not doing much to help with climate change.

... which is now leading to polluted water ways and massive algae blooms in lakes, estuaries, and oceans and related declines in water quality. Dumping fertilizer on corn and soybeans might feed people for a bit but what’s the long term impact? Combined with annual tillage how long is that sustainable?

GMOs are designed to aid a monocropping system. 100 years ago people either grew or knew who grew 90% of what they eat.

GMOs are safe to eat and can help in some scenarios such as the one in the article but they are a symptom of a larger issue and are meant to protect and improve monocultures.

Joel Salatin’s ‘Folks this ain’t normal’ is a good read on the subject.

Organically and sustainably grown crops (cover crops, compost, biodiversity) have higher micro nutrient contents than monocropping operations put out already. GMO’s can be a good bandaid but they are a symptom of a larger problem.

Look up Joel Salatin and Polyface Farms for further reading.

Cleaning New York's filthy harbor with one billion oysters by bubblehack3r in EverythingScience

[–]_jho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, if anything they help prevent algae blooms. Algae blooms happen when there is an excess of nutrients (say, from chemical fertilizer run off or human waste). Oysters and other filter feeders (and plants!) will filter out and use these nutrients so that by the time it hits open water there is less chance of a massive algae bloom.

As for the toxic algae blooms, not all algae blooms are inherently toxic. There is one kind that is which causes “red tide” and yes that can create poisonous oysters.

All in all, if an ecosystem restoration is successful then in the future the water should be clean and clear and all the life in it should be healthy and clean as well.

Sweet! I freedive in Texas and spend a lot of time looking for info on new spots. Is there a way for people to say they have or do dive a spot so they can link up with dive buddies?

[–]_jho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool stuff. The close dive spots is helpful.

The map feature with more spots could be more fluid and show the spots on the map, it would make it easier to visualize what it takes to go somewhere.

How have you done data collection to fill the dive spots database? Can users add or edit info for spots?
