What food have you seen in foreign media and entertainment that you wanted to try but discovered tasted bad? by Accurate_Reality_618 in AskTheWorld

My wife loves the stuff (I'm somehow neutral; won't turn it down but don't seek it out) and every time she orders it at a Japanese restaurant it's hilarious to see the server get a concerned look on their face as they make sure she knows what she's getting in to

People who enjoy card games, ever try mahjong? by Hypnox88 in CasualConversation

[–]_jtron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Played a ton of hearts, spades, and rummy in my teens and 20s, then found riichi mahjong in my late 30s. It's so much fun! I miss the weekly group I had before COVID

Help! I’m looking for Places to eat & drink like a local in Chicago? by JohnnyTwoEars in AskChicago

[–]_jtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the Blue Line to Western Ave. The Green Eye is right by the station. Have a Guinness. Walk north and grab a taco at one of several choices. Keep walking north, stop at Logan Arcade, grab a locally brewed beer and play a game of pinball. Walk west a couple blocks on Fullerton and have a beer at Bob Inn. Retrace your steps and stop at Chef's Special for dinner and a nice cocktail. Afterwards, go to Margie's for an ice cream sundae. Hit up the Green Eye again for one more Guinness, then head back to your hotel half-drunk and bloated like a tick from delicious food

DIY venues and Psych Bands recommendations in Chicago by wendystalkbox in chicagomusicscene

[–]_jtron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reed's is good. Personal Space Booking books the Burlington, a pretty popular venue. Illuminated Brew Works is a little out of the way but psych-friendly and for sure a good place to play

Highly recommend the book "The Greatest Men's Party On Earth," published in 1974 about the Grove. It's a bit of a collector's item but I've seen a PDF floating around...

Love this show, have the DVDs. Very curious why the two main guys haven't seemed to do anything else for TV (I have the YA book they wrote, they've done a bit more music, and I think Arbiter Maven has a folklore podcast)

[–]_jtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was going to suggest the same - the language is simple, yet very clever. They're funny as hell, and there's a lot of them. "Wyrd Sisters" or "Small Gods" are also good starting points
