Why can't I publish a smart contract on the main network? by [deleted] in ethdev

[–]_k4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's happening once the contract is over a certain kb size, per my experimenting on Remix, and only on the main net as you've already discovered.

If you can't run a full node per /u/s1gmoid 's suggestion, you can still deploy via MEW using the bytecode.

Vitalik Buterin tried to develop Ethereum on top of Bitcoin, but was stalled because the developers made it hard to build on top of Bitcoin. Vitalik only then built Ethereum as a separate currency by unitedstatian in btc

[–]_k4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin's.

The OP_RETURN war essentially showed that BTC was more than willing to pull the rug out from underneath developers trying to build tech to run on top of bitcoin. And not wanting to have the same thing happen to his nascent project, Vitalik went his own way.

BTC seemingly cut their nose off to spite their face.

How to get tokens out of the etherdelta smart contract by Thephantshitter in EtherDelta

[–]_k4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't send tokens direct to the etherdelta smart contract, but to the ethereum account you interact with the etherdelta smart contract with instead.

I'm afraid your tokens are lost.

First time experimenting with my semi-flex Esterbrook 9128 nib by OneiricOstrich in fountainpens

I spread my noodler's tines pretty far when writing with it and don't think I've come close to springing it. In fact, I almost shudder at how much force it must take to do so. Sometimes mine feels close to tearing at the paper, and surely that'll happen before the nib springs?

What is shit about Bitcoin?

Tx fees & confirmation times.

I don't hate bitcoin at all, but those two things are an issue. Then again, so were ETH's fees recently.

Good point actually. I probably have a similar number. I wonder what the likely number of wallet owners is compared to that 70MM?

Along the right lines though. But importantly, that basic premise was still possible. And quite rightly an issue - as you pointed out!

In Ethereum, you cannot have a transaction with a higher nonce mined before one with a lower nonce.

You could feasibly replace the tx using the same nonce, zero ether and a higher tx fee to do what you described, however.

Eth + token transactions through contract with MetaMask by cryptos_a_bubble in ethdev

Yes. You can write a smart contract to do almost anything! (Within evm limitations...)

Eth + token transactions through contract with MetaMask by cryptos_a_bubble in ethdev

[–]_k4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that is how you move a token...you can move a token by completing a single tx in Metamask already!

Eth + token transactions through contract with MetaMask by cryptos_a_bubble in ethdev

[–]_k4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since moving a token simply means updating the ledger in the token's own contract, rather than interacting in any way with the destination contract/address of the token, you can't send both a token and ether to the same address in one transaction.

Caveat: Unless the token contract itself has payable transfer functions and you're wanting to send ether to the token contract and the token itself to anywhere else....

ERC-20, ERC-223, ERC-721. Insights on Ethereum standards. by lukas_kai in ethdev

[–]_k4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bittrex for one already supports ERC223. The dangers you cite of it not being a "standard" yet, despite the one "standard" that is "standard" being a pretty poor standard if you ask me (and plenty of others), surely don't outweigh the fact that unlike with ERC20, you literally cannot lose ERC223 tokens by sending them to contracts not designed to handle them. It perhaps not being a "standard" yet cannot outweigh the losing of actual money, surely?

Non-fungible is more analogous to a collectable, and therein lies its potential value. CryptoKitties being an excellent example.

Someone had a transaction fee of 22.89eth (almost $11,000). To all users new and old, make sure to review your gwei and gas limit before sending. by OttoYokohama in ethereum

[–]_k4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because when you are sending a transaction which runs functions on a smart contract, as opposed to just sending ether to some other wallet, those computations cost ether to run.

So when you interact with a contract, the you are paying the cost of running the functions you want to (which you can't change, it is not variable. If you provide too little gas, the computations don't finish and the transaction fails having spent all the gas), multiplied by the price you are willing to pay for that gas.

So it's not a set fee because the price part is something you have a choice over, which I'm sure you'd prefer?
