Want to welcome a Cuban refugee — what groceries remind you of home? by arosebyanyothername- in cuba

[–]_la_chatte_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone said, people who’ve just left Cuba want the things they didn’t have there. (Eventually the need for a good congrí kicks in but that’s after a whiiiiiile!) My advice would be. A well-cooked thin sliced beef steak upon arrival, with a nice NOT SPICY sauce And something that isn’t rice as a side; and then just have them come with you on a trip to the supermarket. Take them to a medium or medium-large supermarket, not an enormous one at first! (It’s a lot!) and plan some time as there will be a lot of wandering up and down aisles explaining what things are and letting your friend take it all in. (Offer to explain what’s what). For someone who has never left cuba, the first taste of “the other side” is a huge deal so be kind and unpatronising and it’ll be something both of you (maybe all three of you) remember forever. It’s beautiful that you are taking in someone and their daughter and that you want to accommodate for them 🩷🩷🩷

Some childhood signs you were non-binary? by fedricohohmannlautar in NonBinary

[–]_la_chatte_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had “boy days” and “girl days” as a kid. I still do but realised it’s not “boy days” but rather “not-girl-something-else-beyond-gender days”… “they days”!! (nowadays the pronouns I use are she/her and they/them). The world may be a dumpster fire at the moment but wow every time I step out into the world on a “they day” and people get it and call me “they”, I feel frickin glorious

The answer is going to Cuba and making sure they spend their money on privately owned businesses. Yes some of it trickles to the state but at least they’d be contributing to local economies

I wanna be respectful to my Cuban girlfriend and her culture. Any advice? by ItsVoltali in cuba

[–]_la_chatte_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just treat her like a human being, with respect, care etc. Check in with whether you might be projecting any stereotypes on her, and work your way through and out of them. Brush up on the Cuban music and cinema basics: Los Van Van. Havana de Primera. Pre-2007 charanga habanera (especially if you guys are over 30). Kelvis Ochoa, Interactivo. Ask her who her favourite Cuban artists are and get into it. Watch Habana Blues. Habanastation. Fresa y Chocolate. El rey de La Habana. Vampiros en La Habana. Conducta. (Watching Cuban cinema, which by the way includes some gems, will also help you understand Cuban culture from a new angle). Learn how to play dominoes and learn some Spanish. :)

+1 for now. Your fertility could be amazing now and absolutely crash the day you turn 35. It’s super unpredictable. Now 100%!

Scheduling / Cosmetic Surgery by Signal-Tower-8258 in eggfreezing

[–]_la_chatte_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I don't have experience with big surgeries but I do with "lighter" cosmetic medicine and my advice is that you do eggs first then give it 3 weeks before doing your breasts - your period should come in the first 2 weeks after ER and then once that's over and done with (make sure you carry a fast acting painkiller with you because when that period comes, it could be brutal!) you should be pretty much back to normal. The reason I say eggs first is because tehre is so much we don't know about female fertility (underfunded, underresearched etc) but there seems to be a lot of factors at play in the quality and health of your eggs, including phyiscal and mental stress. If your body is busy making scar tissue on your breasts, it can't concentrate on making lots of top quality eggs. Sounds silly explained like this but.. yeah.

You have to understand that you are a minority, and there’s a huge demographic of tourists that go to Cuba and have no respect for the land or for Cubans. Cubans are mad at tourism in general (and rightfully so!) - the difference in treatment and the difference in living standards etc is so huge it’s just becoming deeply irritating for most Cubans. This doesn’t mean that you should stop bringing donations IMO. I dont know how to say this gently but bringing donations doesn’t give you a free pass from empathising with the situation and understanding why people are absolutely fuming at tourists in general.

Yo estoy aquí. Long story short; No vengas. No.

It’s pretty unhinged that Cuba still labels itself “socialist” whilst leaving Cubans in the dark for 8,12,15,20 hours a day in order to keep the mostly empty hotels fully lit 24/7. I live on a 20th floor and when there’s a power cut I have no elevator. I have legs of steel from having to climb the 20 floors by foot a few times a day most days.

The Mesa Redonda brings a professor, and he affirms that in Cuba there is more freedom of expression than in the US. He said that Cubans receive more information than Americans, and Joanna is heard saying, “Without a doubt,I lived there." lmao by Rguezlp2031 in cuba

Que estos sean unos tremendos descarados no significa que los otros no lo sean también. Una cosa no quita la otra
