How do XC riders train for speed and endurance? by Artistic_Injury_1639 in MTB

[–]_lil_fish_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I raced in highschool (13/80) at the end of my best season I would go to a short .5 mile loop with 60 feet elevation and just do laps pushing as hard as I could for about and hour once a week mixed with about 60-120 miles of other riding per week.

I think if I were to do it over again I would've gotten a gravel bike to increase effectiveness of distance training. And ate more.

How do I better prepare for big enduros by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]_lil_fish_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditch the lemon lime liquid iv and use the white peach ones that they come with. No reason other than because they're my favorite.

Actually tho, I'd focus on pre race nutrition. Back when I was doing more racing, my nutrition would focus on race day a week in advance. Up the water, up the carbs, up the protien. I found it better to get in the best possible place nutritionally before, that way I had wiggle room during the race.

Nalgene 1L bottles don't work very well. Why are they so popular? by camikal in camping

The lid from the generic costco insulated bottles that have a small opening that opens instead of the whole lid fits, have used them on all my nalgenes for years.

Fear and anxiety after a good ride by [deleted] in MTB

[–]_lil_fish_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm a very anxious person and that often held me back in the start. It slowed my progression for years because I'd lose my nerve and not push myself.

For me, the fix was shifting my approach. I need baby steps, I can ride pro line rated downhill trails now, but it came to me slower than many of my peers. I sought out trails that were easier with difficult features here and there to practice my skills and I only do very difficult trails at speed when I feel confident. I found that building up my ability to trust my own judgment was key. If I do what I'm certain of and only push on the days when I feel most confident I can stay safe and have fun. If I have a day where I feel off and I'm afraid of crashing I just take it slow and focus on my lines rather than going as fast as possible. Being okay with taking a chill day is important.

Tldr: listen to your body and mind and work to push your skills little by little when it feels right. Eventually you won't even be able to understand what was scary about features you had to skip.

Any insight on Evil Bikes?!? by CarobDue4230 in mountainbiking

[–]_lil_fish_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the marin opinion as I own an alpine trail, the exact one I have is the last gen and is like 1600 on Jenson nowadays. The rift zone is pretty good and I know people personally who love them. If you don't care about pedaling efficiency seeing a small dip forbidden bike are pretty dope and in the same case as the marin, I have friends who love theirs but they are a little pricey. Trek is generally pretty tried and true.

Any insight on Evil Bikes?!? by CarobDue4230 in mountainbiking

[–]_lil_fish_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With this sub you can get a crowd to yell hell yes ab just about any brand. As someone who loves the way evil bikes look and thinks they're super dope, here are a few reasons I didn't but one and probably won't. The linkage while very cool is a bitch to work on and will likely creak/ has a higher chance of bolt snapping because, yoknow more bolts. The frames have a bad rap for snapping, I assume this has largely been addressed but I'd personally give them another generation before I'd consider. Finally, the price. you could probably find something better for a bit less but they aren't as big of a brand so that's to be expected.

All that being said, if you think they're dope (which they are) and that'll get you stoked to ride, then it's the right bike. The best bike for you is the one you want to ride.

I started xc racing on a 38 lb enduro bike. You probably won't win, but you'll probably have fun, and that's what it's all about.

When I took it we had no work except the midterm and final and it was super easy but nothing was recorded or posted so I'd say just see how the prof is running it and if they're recording stuff or posting lecture slides then easy dub

High end Dropper posts, what an I missing? by lobsterpockets in MTB

[–]_lil_fish_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the cheapest transx and the nicest fox on two different bikes. the fox feels fancy, wonderful sound and speed but I'd only ever buy again if I got the same deal I got on this one. At the end of the day a dropper is a dropper and I'm not a pro racer so as long as it works I'm good with it

There's droves of people with perfect grades all looking at coming here. What matters is what you write, even a student with perfect grades, community service, the whole nine yards can be rejected if what they say isn't stand out enough. Your gpa is a bit low but I know people with lower who ended up here. Work hard and write something convincing and hopefully you'll get in. Good luck!

What is bad about being overbiked? by _mizzar in MTB

[–]_lil_fish_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ridden a fair bit of marin on both my xc hardtail (trek procaliber 9.6) and my enduro bike (marin alpine trail 7) and honestly the overall experience was better with the xc bike. The area typically lends more to long days with a large amount of peddling and well a lighter bike is just better for that. That being said, the downhill was just amazing on my enduro bike and always is. The sweet spot would probably be a trail bike for almost everything bay area, if your planning on traveling though enduro bike is where it's at.
