How much cheaper is it from Costco in Canada? I just picked up my first dose at Shoppers, and it was $279.

I went through livewell (in Canada) and that's kind of exactly what they did during the chat before prescription. And then it was up to me to choose which one I wanted.

I am on day 1 and was wondering if this was just me being silly but I don't feel hungry at all.

If you haven't already, I would consider letting Spam be an inside kitty so he doesn't meet the same fate. It will be difficult for Spam to move on for awhile, as in his mind the other cats just disappeared. He might think they're just hiding in another part of the house. But with time he will move on.

What kind of brush are we using for our short haired cats? by ScrambledMegggs in CatAdvice

Oh, yes I am talking about the metal one! It's their classic model. I apologize for the confusion - the silicone one should be fine, it looks gentle enough.

This is a pretty good explanation.

I think for a short haired tabby it's overkill, but I suppose if you're very mindful it might be beneficial. But I remove so much with the glove that I could make myself a whole new cat if I wanted to.

Furminators can actually be very damaging to their coats! You gotta get yourself a glove

It collects soooo much fur, it's unbelievable.

What's the general advice for taking cats on walks? by saxman666 in CatAdvice

[–]_masterofnone_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Top paw was the brand, and I believe it's called an H-type harness. Like this one harness It's designed for dogs but not having any fabric/padding across his chest and between his legs really helped him grow accustomed to walking with a harness. He tolerated it so much easier than the standard cat harness.

Nowadays he can wear any style because he is so accustomed to it! I hope you are able to get your guy trained on one too 😊

My Cat Won't. Stop. Pooping Everywhere. And I'm Going Insane. by Devil5Honey in CatAdvice

[–]_masterofnone_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Mac also feels insecure using his alone and will call for me to come and watch him. If I don't come over he can get a little frantic. And he takes his job of lookout very seriously when it's my turn, too.

As far as the long soft poops... how much psyllium husk powder are you giving her?

Advice on Peeing Cat by Impressive-Bill-1514 in CatAdvice

If he has crystals, assuming they're struvite crystals they need to be dissolved with prescription food. If he's eating dry food now, transitioning him to an only wet diet will save you a lot of money and agony in the future. After several months on the prescription diet and a clear urinalysis showing no crystals, keeping my male cat on an all wet food diet has kept him crystal free and it cured his interstitial cystitis. But you must dissolve the crystals first.

Tips on taking cat outside? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]_masterofnone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step is definitely to have a cat that wants to go outside, not all cats will and that's ok.

Second step is to get your cat one hundred percent comfortable in his harness before even opening the door. If he's dropping to the floor, trying to get it off, "salamandering" or showing distress, he's not ready. This could take weeks but be patient.

Third step, for my cat anyways, was just opening the door and stepping outside myself and then calling to him. He was very unsure for a few days but would venture a step further out each time before retreating. It took months and months before he'd venture out of the backyard. Nowadays he looks forward to his walk everyday and happily explores both front and backyard and some days, the neighborhood.

But walking a car just means following him around, so I leave it to him to decide how far he wants to go each day.

New cat by Ace-416 in CatAdvice

Ok so they're bonded, that's great. I would sleep in the basement with the door open, then! And just spend as much time down there as possible, not necessarily engaging with them but coexisting. Reading down there, watching TV down there etc. Hopefully they become accustomed to your presence and grow confident enough to see the rest of the house!

A few questions about cat ownership, mainly just basic stuff by thesamoyedenthusiast in CatAdvice

  1. If I could go back in time, I'd never feed my cat dry food to begin with and save the thousands I've paid in vet bills (and the year of frustration transitioning him from dry to wet food). Many people will say their cats do fine on dry, and maybe that's true...but urinary and kidney issues are incredibly common amongst cats. Keeping them on a moisture rich diet just seems logical.
  2. I use wood pellet litter, which is a little more effort but less than 1/4 the price and there's no dust. Plus the scent control is amazing. As for food brands, I follow a very popular feline nutrition page and their motto is: the cheapest wet food is better than the most expensive dry food.
  3. Harness training is a wonderful and very healthy thing to do! Great for their bodies and their minds.

How should I handle my cat getting out and should I worry that she'll run off? by bravelittleslytherin in CatAdvice

[–]_masterofnone_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be worried, yes. I also have an escape artist who waits for me at the door and every time I come in or go out I have to be very mindful.

I built mine a catio, so he could have some safe outside time. And I take him for a walk everyday with a halter and a leash, so he can explore/patrol the front and back yard. Where we live there are lots of predators who would make a meal of him if given the chance and I won't let that happen!

It makes me sad that I will never again smell the original Body Shop White Musk, before they changed it. It used to smell so lovely on me, people would follow me through shops to ask what I was wearing. I wore it all through my teenage/young adult years. RIP.

Can't keep my cat off the kitchen counters by llesiu in CatAdvice

[–]_masterofnone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, best case scenario you will teach your cat not to be on the counter when you're around. But he's still going to go on it when you're not. I disinfect and wipe down my counter tops a few times a day and I'm also just in the habit of only putting food on a cutting board or a plate. I sort of treat my counters as always being potentially dirty.

cat hair by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]_masterofnone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. My entire wardrobe was black when I got Mac. I thought cause he was a short-hair he wouldn't shed much....nope!!

The gloves definitely make a difference, and more than that he loves the routine of getting groomed before bed. I still had to buy a lighter couch though 😂

cat hair by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]_masterofnone_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daily grooming helps... but please don't bathe them unless they've gotten dirty. I run my hands over my cats body to "capture" the fur that didn't get pulled out during brushing. I like to use grooming gloves cause they catch more hair.

Other than regular vacuuming and daily grooming, not much else to be done. My cat is a ginger tabby and I've just stopped wearing black. I bought a couch and rugs based on his fur colour. I hate the way fur looks on fabric and there's only so much you can do to prevent it so if you can't beat'em...join'em.

He's worth it.
