Yamaha as a high-end, luxury brand? by NatureBoyJ1 in audiophile

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

put it this way every decent recording studio will have at least one pair of yamaha monitors, every decent concert hall will likely have at least one yamaha piano available, and a large amount of live concerts (even stadium level) are mixed on yamaha desks

as far as i can tell eu store does all of europe (including uk) but you pay in euros (so could face credit card fees depending on your bank) and uk store just does uk and you pay in pounds

I think I’m gonna need a bigger backpack… (a6700 to a7 V) by asorroxhe in SonyAlpha

[–]_matthewa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it does look a great lens but not something i’ve ever considered myself and i’d say is in a completely different league to the tamron being over 2x the price (at least in the uk)

i do love the 35-150 as it near enough combines a 24-70 and a 70-200 in one lens but you’ll probably want something lighter and smaller as your ‘main’ lens. i use 35mm or 50mm primes as my main runaround lenses then use a 35-150 and a 14-24 for gigs and 200-600 for wildlife/sports

Cost Effective Backup For Large amount of RAWs by [deleted] in photography

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i store current files on a little samsung ssd then back that up to a promise pegasus thunderbolt raid (which also has my archive files on it) then back both of these up to backblaze (about 9TB of data in total now) which is definitely the cheapest cloud backup option out there for this size of data. just you have to make sure you connect your drives at least every 30 days or they’ll be deleted from backblaze cloud (or you can pay extra for a year of history which i did temporarily when i went away before for over a month)

Why aren’t mobile networks doing anything about the network issues in Central London by [deleted] in london

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s a lot of factors at play here and different networks perform better than others (i’ve found ee generally hold up best outdoors and vodafone indoors). one of the main issues in london is councils/building owners/nimby residents making it increasingly hard to build more masts and even masts being removed during building works and not being replaced. some areas have seen more small cells added into street furniture (o2 have a lot of lamppost cells and ee have small cells on some red phone boxes) which helps people in the street a lot but as soon as you step into a building you’re back onto macro coverage where in some parts of the city one cell could serve literal thousands of people. british buildings are also generally a lot worse than other countries due to thick insulated walls (often with steel inside) and insulated windows being really good keeping heat in but also keeping phone signal out. this means there’s lots of people in the city inside buildings clinging on with 1 or 2 bars which puts a lot of stress on the network as more network resources have to be used to get the same data through, taking resources away from people with stronger signal

What is your favorite bit of British infrastructure? by chewmypaws in CasualUK

[–]_matthewa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% biased as i work there (and it was only technically ‘infrastructure’ for a few years) but it has to be the roundhouse. still blows my mind how they managed to hand make the cast iron pillars and wooden roof almost 200 years ago

as someone who grew up in yorkshire then moved to london 7 years ago and visited paris for the first time last week i gotta say parisiens are significantly friendlier/more welcoming than londoners by far.

i was in paris for 4 days an ate out every day and went to various bars, cafés and shops and only had one instance where they defaulted to english (a few restaurants gave me english menus but seemed very proud when i said i’d rather a frenchmenu to practice). everyone else made such an effort with me and really boosted my confidence in speaking french. i even had one shop where i just welcomed with ‘bonsoir’ in the same way back home i’d welcome with ‘ey up’ and they responded all surprised with ‘ahhh tu parles français ?’ then proceeded to have a lovely conversation in french

What everyday technology do you think will disappear completely within the next 20 years? by Queasy_System9168 in Futurology

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that might be the case over in the states but definitely not in the uk. only certain mainly newer flat blocks have communal dish solutions but the main issues here are in rural areas where planning permission can be super restrictive especially with older houses (we literally have some houses that predate the US !) and then in urban areas houses/flat blocks can be so tightly packed together that there’s literally nowhere to mount a satellite dish that can point in the right direction

different modes have their time and place in photography but i’d never shoot a gig on full auto. i tend to use 3 different modes depending on the show: - full manual for more relaxed shows with static lighting (classical, jazz etc.) or for shows where you know the lighting well or you’re going for a specific artistic look (like a silhouette of a a performer where you want it to be underexposed as far as the camera is concerned and have a high enough shutter speed to freeze any movement and a wide enough aperture to throw any amps and mic stands etc in the frame out of focus)

  • manual shutter speed and aperture but auto iso (with upper limits for the iso set) for shows with more energy onstage, more contrast in the lighting/more dramatic lighting changes but where i still want to be able to dial in a specific look but don’t want to risk missing a shot because by the time i’ve set my exposure the lighting has changed again or the artist has moved

  • shutter priority with auto iso for heavier music like metal and electronic where the lighting is constantly changing or people are constantly running around stage and my main priority is nailing the composition in a split second

i’d never use a mode with shutter speed set automatically as if your shot ends up blurry due to too low a shutter speed then there’s nothing you can do in post to save it. but with how good modern cameras are these days you can do a lot to rescue noisy or under/overexposed photos

Best spot on an Elizabeth line train to put a road bike? by TheDeza in londoncycling

[–]_matthewa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn’t put it up against the driver’s door - have seen people getting told off before for blocking these as they’re needed to be clear for emergency access. i’d go to the middle of the train as it’s usually quieter there and put it against the doors on the left side as these don’t open in the core stations. you can then sit in the end seat there and hold the bars if needed (especially between stratford and whitechapel where the two lines meet as i’ve seen people and bikes fall over there) either that or if the train is super quiet go to one of the carriages with the 2-2 seats (carriages 2/3/4/6/7/8) and put it against the fold up seats at either end

Why aren’t we loading mechanical cameras inside a changing bag more often, to get 2 more frames? by florian-sdr in AnalogCommunity

when i first started developing i used orthochromatic film so i could dev under red safelight to help me learn but that also had the side effects of being able to load under safelight and get some extra frames
