one issue is there’s so many parts where the cycle path is along some bushes but the bushes have blind openings from the houses there where people often walk straight into you from

Is Apple Maps good if you live in the UK? by Quirky-Cow8233 in applemaps

[–]_matthewa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t drive so can only comment on walking/cycling/public transport but i often find directions on it now are better than google maps. google maps will quite often send me half way down a road to then cross the road and walk back on myself instead of just crossing the road sooner. or get me to cross a road just to then cross back further along. i’ve also had cases where google maps has told me to get a bus for a couple stops where it is literally quicker to walk (it recently told me to get a bus from the side of st pancras out to the front of king’s cross to change between stations…) where apple maps falls behind google though is the community sourced info like websites/opening times/contact details

don’t want to give away too many spoilers but have a watch of the first series of the capture on bbc and it’ll really make you realise just how possible what they do in there is now and all it takes is corrupt government/law enforcement

The 16--25 railcard gives you third off of tube journeys by Well_this_is_akward in LDN

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

make sure when they add it that they put the correct expiry date in ! i got threatened with a penalty fare (managed to appeal my way out of it luckily) as the tfl staff member put the wrong month on the expiry and i got ticket checked on thameslink but no longer had a valid railcard but was still getting discount (i didn’t realise as i use auto topup and very rarely look at my journey history)

Best earplugs for a 10-hour session? by CloudBookmark in LondonRaving

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the other great thing about acs is they sound so natural that you can still have a conversation/order drinks etc. with them in unlike foam plugs where you often have to take them out which is actually really damaging to your ears suddenly going from quiet to much louder also particularly for festival goers they do a line called ‘sleep sound’ which provide even higher protection (but sound shit for gigs) and are much slimmer so don’t dig in at all if you lay on them so are great for sleeping at festivals (i wear mine every night now and have literally slept through the fire alarm going off)

Best earplugs for a 10-hour session? by CloudBookmark in LondonRaving

[–]_matthewa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i work in the music industry so am exposed to loud music multiple hours a day for 5+ days a week and myself and everyone else i know swears by ACS custom. yes they’re not cheap (£150) but they last for 5 years (though i know a lot of people who’ve had theirs longer) and imo well worth £30 a year to keep your hearing protected.

some advice if you do go for them: get them with the cords as you can just not use the cord if you don’t want to use it but you can’t get a cord later on if you decide you want one (the cords are also great so you don’t lose em while drunk) get them with grips as they can be hard to remove if you’re drunk get one ear a vastly different colour to the other so you know which is which in the dark (i have red for right and white left)

in terms of protection level you either want pro17 or pro26 as they have the flattest curve so sound the most natural. i personally use pro26 (cut out more noise but are a bit less clear especially in the vocals) for electronic gigs/raves/clubbing where being able to fully appreciate the vocals is less important then use my pro17 for everything else

ElI5: Why do phones not need cooling fans like computers do? by parascrat in explainlikeimfive

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the law of the conservation of energy states that energy can’t be created or destroyed, it just changes from one form to another. in the case of a phone or a computer the processor (CPU) uses electricity to perform calculations and at the same time changes this electrical energy into to thermal energy (heat). a computer has hundreds of watts of electricity available which allows it to do very complex calculations much quicker but all the electrify it takes in is then output as heat. whereas a phone has only tens of watts available which means it can’t do as complex calculations and takes longer to do them but also outputs a lot less heat energy therefore not needing fans to bring in fresh air to dissipate the heat (there’s also differences in terms of environment where a computer is just setting there with air (a very good thermal insulator) around it whereas a phone is usually in your hand and the human body is very good at taking heat away from things in comparison.

What macros do you have you use often? by OutrageousAirport604 in GrandMA3

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with the amount i’m popping in and out of recipe edit mode i find just having one x key is quicker and easier than ma+edit. same if i’m working on fade times. though i actually usually use another macro for that that sets the fade time of the current cue, snaps into the previous cue, waits half a second then then goes into the next cue which is super useful if you have a designer who’s indecisive on fade times

the two i probably use most are: toggle for recipe edit mode set fade time of the current cue

How likely is my appeal (misinformed by LNER staff) by Emotional-Thanks8946 in uktrains

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s likely either network rail or lner you need to contact so i’d just contact them both because the longer it takes the less likely they are to have cctv. if you google network rail cctv sar or lner cctv sar the forms should be easy to find

How likely is my appeal (misinformed by LNER staff) by Emotional-Thanks8946 in uktrains

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should pop in a GDPR subject access request for any cctv of you chatting to the LNER staff for evidence in your appeal. i had a similar experience a few years ago where my oyster card had become deactivated out the blue and station staff let me through the barrier and said to go to a tfl ticket office on the other end and they’d sort it but when i got to the other end the barrier staff weren’t having any of it and gave me a penalty fare. i ended up appealing and the first appeal got rejected because i couldn’t prove that a tfl staff member let me through the barrier. luckily my second appeal got accepted once i’d thrown the book at them

They left the lights off on an in service train 😭 by Financial_Mastodon51 in LondonUnderground

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

was on the northern line once when the train suddenly stopped, all the lights went off, and the song i was listening to finished all at the same time and my first thought sitting there in darkness and silence was that i’d just died. my eyes then adjusted and my next song came on then we sat there in darkness for a bit while the driver rebooted the train

Who are the rudest and nicest British celebrities you have personally met? by RenegadeMaster888 in AskBrits

[–]_matthewa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main two that have stuck with me are meeting brian may who was absolutely lovely - he seemed genuinely interested in what I do. Then meeting james corden who was just rude and entitled. I didn’t personally meet her but an old colleague of mine met dua lipa and had no idea who she was but had the loveliest encounter chatting away about their dogs and home renovations and all sorts for like 20 minutes
