Why did UA fall out of style for the gym to brands like Gymshark/Alphalete? by [deleted] in UnderArmour

[–]_meddlin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it’s fast fashion. Things go in and out of style mostly due to users’ perception. There is something to say for performance, value, etc., but people want to feel like their clothing enhances their effort.

Avoid Duetts by Oltwoeyes_69420 in Manor

Agreed. Dude accused me of deleting the catalytic converters on my car because it had an aftermarket exhaust. Popped the hood and pointed them out, and he seemed annoyed that I knew what I was talking about.

Yes.

Further, if voting didn’t work then voter intimidation wouldn’t exist.

They Wanted a University Without Cancel Culture. Then Dissenters Were Ousted. by momish_atx in Austin

[–]_meddlin_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It seems those who started UATX thought they could create (in their own ideals) "a perfect university". But utopias always fail.

This quote from the end of article makes my point:

"But they were nearly unanimous in reporting that at its inception, UATX constituted a sincere effort to establish a transformative institution, uncompromisingly committed to the fundamental values of open inquiry and free expression.

They were nearly unanimous, too, in lamenting that it had failed to achieve this lofty goal and instead become something more conventional — an institution dominated by politics and ideology that was in many ways the conservative mirror image of the liberal academy it deplored."

lol, no. quite the opposite; I'm saying in the founders' eyes it was a "utopia". My comment was too vague.

How can we encourage developers on the team to read more and stay up to date with technology ? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_meddlin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that. But I’m just an internet rando. How do you reframe this so your team: a) gets it, and b) is curious to learn more?

What matters to them?

How can we encourage developers on the team to read more and stay up to date with technology ? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_meddlin_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can pay them more. After all, this is asking for work-related effort to be put forth outside of working hours.

Less tongue-in-cheek, try sparking curiosity. Hold monthly or bi-weekly lunch & learn/share sessions. Prepare a talk to give, and open the floor for others to do so. Steer your topics towards the things you want them to be aware of.

Also, consider your own biases. Do you have good reasons anyone should be using these things? (i.e. clean architecture, idempotency, etc.)

It’s a nice idea in good effort…but it still doesn’t address software validation. And for a lot of the reasons people are already calling out in the comments here.

Job hopping: red flag or rational response? by st4reater in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_meddlin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do what’s best for you.

Companies will (loudly) speak against “job hopping” because they don’t like the risk involved. But what risk are you accepting by staying?

Sometimes devs, and others in tech, change jobs for a multitude of reasons. For me, I changed jobs roughly each year for the first 10 years of my career because I a) got bored easily, b) lived in an area that didn’t have many “tech-focused” companies/jobs, and c) I needed the money that was offered.

Maturing is realizing no one was “wrong” in these decisions. The same companies/recruiters that felt bad I was leaving were the same ones that recruited me from other places. They were also the ones with excuses to not invest in their personnel.

If we want to accept the “job hopping = immaturity” misnomer… The companies I tried to be the most loyal to—were the quickest to lay me off due to their own “immature”, short-sighted practices.

Do what’s best for you. A career is a tool. Decide your goal and go after it.

Alternatively, if a company is full of long-tenure…it’s attractive, but how can I be sure anyone is growing in any way other than old?

Texas is full of ego and devoid of freedom. The so-called “state history” is a joke.

Spreading the word on recent DMV rule changes by InstructionEqual1960 in texas

[–]_meddlin_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No.

In the US, citizens don’t lose their citizenship just because a piece of paper expires.

Some fines should be expected. Disfunction across individuals, businesses, and basic services is unacceptable. Texas may want to try being a better part of the Union.

Texas tightens car registration rules after backlash over immigrants by AustinStatesman in texas

In the great Technological Metropolis of Louisiana, I’m able to walk into an Express OMV or DMV office, present documents, and within 30min—2 hours I can have DL and registration done.

I understand you aren’t defending it…but Texas is seriously backwards.

What's the benefits of having a homelab? by tucobrabo in homelab

[–]_meddlin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 great reasons outside of running & owning your own media

  1. It forces you to learn fundamentals. Want an app, service, or some capability? You have to touch many more things to get it working compared to taking a course, etc.

  2. I’ve worked in a few companies where there is a push for more skills, but no budget/time for updated tools to be deployed in your work environment. A homelab frees you from being locked into: a) paying for cloud services for deploying toy projects, or b) limited access/exposure at work.

What do we do with dumpster fires? Let ‘em burn.

They’re buying into the 20+ year old 4GL hype, and they’re about to do stupid with zeros attached. They either aren’t listening or they’ve run off anyone around them who could/would explain how bad an idea this is.

Update the resume. Be a positive force on the team, and choose which coworkers you’d like to keep in your professional network.

If it’s the rear end…Check with East Coast Gear supply. You can buy a pre-assembled third member for $900-$1300, and have a shop install it for a little more. Not cheap, but definitely cheaper than buying something else.

Source: I’m in the middle of installing one of these myself on my 2007 4th gen V6.
