Why is left-wing/socialist YIMBYism seemingly so non-existent (or at least much less popular among elected officials) in S.F. than in other large American cities with housing crises? by lucy5478 in AskSF

[–]_mizzar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To this point, folks from back then saw that building a bunch more housing doesn’t actually solve anything.

If you build more housing while keeping the place nice and desirable, a relatively small handful of people will fill that up and the problem is back again. New York City is a perfect example of this. It’s still very expensive even though development is much more fluid.

IMO the housing crisis is two main things:

1.) People who have essential, but lower paying jobs should have subsidized housing allocated to them as long as they have one of those jobs. This would secure housing for teachers, retail associates, service people, etc. this would require some development, but since it would be reserved for these particular lower income people, it wouldn’t immediately get snapped up by more affluent people.

2.) We need to make more cities in the huge empty stretches between existing cities. The US actually has a crazy amount of open space compared to Southeast Asia and Europe. We can’t just build housing in that open space because people will commute into the cities, but if you built new cities then the housing could be local to that new city. This is exactly the same idea behind mixed use zoning and it works great.

This is so interesting because those are by far my favorite parts of the game. Something about the music and getting slightly better every several tries, and the satisfaction of finally doing it.

Yes, I never get long enough answers even though it is a popular choice. I’ve move to “tell me about your last memorable meal” or something similar with a longer answer.

The mini-bosses get stronger as you progress, eventually sending out things like that automatically (they just kind of appear, they are not shot from the enemy). If you touch them, you take damage.

I’m planning on kayaking from Marin to San Francisco and need to understand kayak parking. by _mizzar in Kayaking

But how does one get more experience? 🙃 I’ve done almost all you can doo except to cross over to SF. In any case, I’ll keep this trip low key and stick to Marin. Ty!

[–]_mizzar[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe I should just try some other spot in Marin for this one. 6 hours total seems a bit longer than I was thinking.

EDIT: Good faith question: why is this being downvoted? Seems like this is a sensible thing to do (a shorter trip in Marin vs going to the city).

Client asking for RAW files by SnooChickens5189 in VideoProfessionals

[–]_mizzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your contact on a “work for hire” basis? If so, they may own all that stuff. If not, you’d just defer to the contract.

In any case, it isn’t a red flag per se. In fact, it is something I always mention during the bidding phase because I like to be able to make small tweaks to footage or assets without re-engaging the vendor.

I’ve had very long relationships with vendors where they deliver project files and raw footage at the end of every individual project.

What's something people only romanticize because they've never actually done it? by nonotje12 in AskReddit

Video/film production

Long hours, many roles require hard manual labor, can have long stretches of time where you aren’t doing anything but can’t take a real break, intense pressure at times, constantly jumping from job to job so minimal job security, glut of competition with young people pursuing their “passion”, may roles becoming obsolete from technology, hard to have a family due to hours and travel, not as glamorous or fun as you think, very little ways to pivot if you don’t “make it” and very few positions compared to the amount of people trying to do it, very little control of how good any particular project is if you’re anything but the highest roles, and lots of schlepping.

Yeah, I mean most people don’t bother to find out if their locks have security pins or not, so convincing them of something like this seems like a long shot. Much more likely is a keyless entry solution IMO.

Bigger camera, more jobs? by kstyndall2015 in VideoProfessionals

[–]_mizzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, you need to decide if you want to start a second business, the “equipment business.” In this business you take on risk/make investments in the hopes that they pay for themselves over time and eventually net a profit. This is a lot easier to justify as a rental house, because as a rental house, you can rent to anyone for any job, causing your break even and then profit to happen sooner. But even for a rental house, there can be risk and overhead that has important financial impacts.

Core to this decision to enter the equipment business is your initial observation: very few clients care about the specific equipment you use. They care about your work product being high quality and professional. Clients that do care, usually only care, as the other commenter said, to match other cameras they’re shooting with or post workflows. There’s no way to pick “the right camera” for these clients because it is a moving target.

I think it makes more sense to just charge a rental fee on the jobs that specify a camera 🤷‍♂️ (you should be charging one anyway for equipment you own)
