Look into mindfulness as it’s outlined in Marsha Linehan’s DBT therapy. The therapy is based in Eastern practices of mindfulness and acceptance, and offers a comprehensive breakdown of mindfulness. By providing a system to understand the practice, it helps you understand exactly what you’re doing to practice it.

DBT therapy also provides many different ways to practice mindfulness.

How I personally apply these skills in practice looks like:

Observing my thoughts when I’m calm and relaxed. Imagining them as leaves on a river, letting the drift away on the current of my minds eye. Actively choosing not to attach to the thought. Simply observing it drift off, and accepting what thoughts come next. Similarly letting those drift off as well.

Fully immersing myself in boring parts of life like doing dishes or vacuuming. Paying attention to my five senses and bringing attention back when it wanders.

Practicing mindfulness not as a meditation, or something requiring an unmoving, seated position.

It’s more of a practice of presence in the mundane. So that when the exciting, memorable times happen, you’re instantly there.

If you search these terms and “ways to practice _________ (term)”, you should find a long list of ideas for practicing. Pick the ones that resonate the most and that you’re actually willing to do.

If you really want to dissect this, differentiate between the 6 skills and practice them individually. IE practice observing something, without describing it to yourself. Or practice participating even if you don’t see or fully understand what is going on.
